I am awoken by the sound of our plane touching down.
"Welcome to Detroit. We hope you enjoy your stay here or wherever your travels will bring you." The flight attendant says.
I look out the window to see the familiar surroundings.
We all pile out of the plane and walk to baggage claim. My stuff is at the number three.
"Ashley?" Someone says from behind me.
I turn around, "Kate?"
"I haven't seen you in almost a year." She says.
"Yeah. What are you doing home?" I ask, quickly changing the subject.
"I'm actually picking my mom up from a business trip. After you left, I couldn't exactly afford the apartment on my own, so I ended up coming back home and going to school here." She tells me.
"Oh yeah, sorry about that." I say.
"It's fine. California was always more your dream then mine anyway. Speaking of dreams, you haven't posted on YouTube in forever." Kate says.
"Yeah, I know. I mean I've filmed, but nothing is ever good enough, so I just kind of stopped." I explain.
"Wait, why are you home? I thought you lived with O2L?" She questions.
"Well as you probably know, Jc and I broke up a few weeks ago and the other boys are moving into a new house. I just didn't feel like I fit in there anymore. I mean of course I love them, but at VidCon last June, my mom was nagging me about coming home for school anyway, so I'm here now." I tell her.
"Oh, I'm sorry. It's kind of sad because it seems like O2L is falling apart. First Jc and he didn't even announce it and now Connor. It's so sad." She says as I turn around to grab my bag.
At first, I didn't register her words, but then they hit me, "Connor?"
"Yeah, well you were obviously in the air, but he put up a new video a few hours ago. You should probably watch it." Kate tells me.
I just stare at her blankly.
"Oh! There's my mom!" And she runs off.
I run to the outside of the airport and scramble to find my mom.
I finally see her standing infront of the totally wrong gate, typical mom.
"Honey! How are you?" She asks, hugging me.
"Um I'm fine, just tired. I need to go home." I tell her, still wondering what Connor's video could of been about.
"That's too bad, I was gonna take you out to eat." My mom says.
"Maybe tomorrow, can we please go home?" I ask, trying to sound as nice as possible.
My mom nods and we walk to the car.
My phone is dead, so I can't even watch the video or check Twitter or anything. The anticipation of this video is killing me.
The car ride is silent. When we pull into the driveway, I book it to my room, leaving all my bags in the car.
I swing open my door, and everything looks the same, as if I'd never left. My bed is still made, just a little dusty. My closet is still full of the old clothes I used to adore. It's a very bitter sweet moment until I remember why I ran into my room. I sit down at my desk top since my laptop is still buried in my carry-on, which is still in the car.
I click on the bookmark titled "YouTube" and search "Connor Franta". There's his new video. I click play and listen very carefully as he explains to me that he is leaving O2L.
He talks about being depressed, which brings me to tears because I can't believe I never saw it.
My phone is finally on and charging. I call Connor.
We chat for two hours before I see that the sun is setting. I tell him that I have to go unpack.
"Connor, I'm so proud of you." I saw at last.
"Thank you, Ash. It means the world. Good luck with your new life in Detroit, I miss you." He replies.
"I miss you too, Connor. Goodbye." I say.
"Goodbye." He hangs up.
Now the scariest thought is running through my head, will I ever see them again?
