Hector Rivera had certainly not picked the easiest life. He ran a shaking hand through his raven black hair and let out an exasperated sigh. Glancing down at the paper in his hands, he shook his head and banged his one hand against the table beneath him. They had really done it this time. Living on the road as struggling musicians meant going from hotel to hotel, town to town, and that was never cheap. On top of that, as they were just starting out, they didn't make a lot of money on the road, not yet at least, they hoped. But for now, as Hector went over their finances, he found that they were barely going to have enough money for food this week. But, hey, at least they had a hotel...albeit not a very nice one. Hector rubbed at his temples, attempting to ease a growing headache.
The clamor that then erupted from the hall didn't help. His musical partner, Ernesto de la Cruz, busted out of his bedroom door and started down the hall to the main room where Hector sat. Ernesto knew nothing of their financial struggles, except that every once in a while, they couldn't go out to eat as much as they usually do. Hector prefered not to tell him as Hector knew how emotional and, often times, dramatic his best friend could be. Knowing that they weren't super successful yet might send the man off the deep end. Hector had a big enough headache brewing with the worry of the money alone. He did not need Ernesto freaking out on top of it. No. Much better to keep him in the dark, keep him happy, and put on a brave face. Today was no different, Ernesto was just as oblivious as ever.
"I'm off, Hector!" Ernesto hollered to his friend as he made for the door. Hector's heart sank at the words. Whenever Ernesto went out, that usually meant money was going to be spent. Hector tried his best to control the fear in his voice.
"O-Oh, okay, 'Nesto...Uh, wh-where are you off to?" Ernesto sprayed himself with a couple pumps of his typical strong cologne and opened the door.
"I have a date with una senorita bonita esta noche! Wish me luck, amigo!" With that, the man rushed out the door and slammed it shut, shaking the whole room. Hector's eyes clenched shut as the door violently returned to its typical place and turned his aching head back to the table. He sighed heavily.
"Buenas suerte...," he mumbled, defeated, as he removed another 300 pesos from their budget. He labeled the new removal 'Date Night'.
"Ay...," Hector heaved as he slumped down in his chair. He sat in the stillness of the hotel room for several minutes, just taking in the rare peace and quiet. Being on the road with Ernesto de la Cruz meant dealing with almost constant motion. That man was like a fire, ever roaring with energy unless it was snuffed out. Hector was quite the opposite. Sure, he liked to have fun and party as much as the next hombre, but he also valued his down time. He liked to unwind. But to hell if he was going to be the one to "snuff" Ernesto's fire. The only thing worse than a happy, energetic Ernesto is a sad, distraught Ernesto. Why make life more complicated than it already was. Somebody had to be responsible. But still, Hector was a young man himself. He would like to go out with girls sometimes. He would love to be as carefree as Ernesto was. But he just couldn't afford to be.
And to make matters worse, Ernesto was always around. Hector had no time to himself. No time to read a book, no time to concentrate solely on his music, no time to...relieve himself, like any man of his age needs to do. Ernesto, on the other hand, was never shy. He didn't care if Hector heard him from the other room, be it with a girl or on his own. Hector was, once again, the polar opposite. He was very personal. He wanted no one to hear him except himself and his partner, should there be one. But, no, Ernesto was always around.
