Miguel

After that day in Miguel's secret place, the two of you kept getting closer and closer. You introduced him to your family one day, at whom he smiled sheepishly and waved. Your family treated the boy kindly, inviting him in for homemade tamales every Friday night. When it came time for Miguel to introduce you to his family, you admitted you were nervous. After everything he had said about his family, you were expecting them to be...awful. They'd probably hate you. But you wanted to keep your friendship with Miguel, so his family had to be part of the package. When he introduced you, you waited for a biting comment. His Abuelita, Elena, looked you up and down...then smiled broadly.

"Ay, Mija! It is so nice to meet you! I had no idea my Miguelito had such a cute little friend!" She embraced you enthusiastically, holding you close to her chest. You tried to mutter out a nicety, but it was muffled into her blouse. You managed to peer behind you and saw Miguel covering his mouth, muffling a laugh at your situation. You glared at him, still strongly in the embrace of Abuelita.

"Come in, come in, Mija! I just made tacos, I insist you have some! Come, come!" The old woman grabbed you by the arm and drug you into the house. Your jaw dropped slightly. There were shoes EVERYWHERE! There were shoes on the shelves on the wall, there were shoes on the wall hung from nails, there were shoes in every corner of every room. Yet, shockingly, every pair was in pristine condition. In retrospect, you weren't sure why you were surprised. The Riveras were shoemakers. Naturally, their home would have a lot of shoes. The whole house smelled of leather and shoe polish. But it was still homey nonetheless. The Rivera family introduced themselves one by one, each one equally as kind as the last. The dinner was filled with laughs, which just made you question the whole music ban. This family seemed far too kind and understanding to inflict such a rule. How was it possible?

You soon found out.

The dinner continued to go well until a mariachi band could be heard playing outside. The whole table quieted. You could have heard a speck of dust fall if there was one in the entire house. Then you heard a bang come from Abuelita's end of the table. She had banged her glass down and had begun marching to the open window. The family just silently kept eating. You glanced over to Miguel, who had his head supported in one hand. He made eye contact with you and frowned. You heard him anxiously tapping his foot under the table. You could tell he had NOT wanted you to see this. Abuelita finally arrived at the open window.

"NO MUSIC!!!" She shrieked at the musicians outside. You heard them clamor around and flee. The old woman slammed the window shut and blessed herself.

"Papa..?" A soft voice echoed from the end of the table where Abuelita was sitting just moments ago. You turned. It was the eldest of the family, Abuelita's mother, Coco. The elder was sitting in her wheelchair shaking, clearly getting upset by the music. "Is it...Papa? Papa is home?" Abuelita rushed to the woman's side, shushing her.

"No, Mama...Shhh...it's okay...," Eventually the elder calmed down and dinner resumed, but now in awkward silence.

After the meal, you and Miguel sat on a bench just outside of the family compound. The Riveras were all around the courtyard, so going up to Miguel's secret place was too risky. But the conversation you wanted to have was not one you really wanted the Riveras to hear. You started quietly.
