When I get to the train tracks,I sit next to the rail and look around once more. This part of Chicago is so empty and deserted. The buildings are slowly crumbling to bits each year. There's an old apothicary shop across from me that 2 years ago was in pretty good shape. Now all it is is a pile of rubble.
When I hear the whistle of the train blare in my ears,I stand up and start jogging along the side of the train. The train cars pass by me quickly until all that's left is the last car. I jump into the car but only half my body is inside. I scream at the top of my lungs cause last thing I want to happen is get trampled to death by a train. I already died once and that's enough for me to know that death is worse than what people think. ITS PAINFUL!!!
As I'm about to slip off with my fingers just barely hanging on to the edge,a large hand reaches out to me and I quickly grasp it. The person that the hand belongs to pulls me inside and helps me stand up. I'm shaking from fear when I eventually stand up . I can't see the persons face because the shadows of the train car cover him like a veil.
"What the heck were you thinking!?!?!" the person says. I know that voice. Uriah.
"Uriah?"
"Who do you think it was,Tris? A living person?" he says sarcastically.
"I guess so."
He steps out of the shadows and into the bright sunlight where I can see him. He's completely see through but he acts human and feels human. My eyes grow wide at the sight of him like this. While I was dead he looked the way he always looked except extremely pale like I was.
"How can I see you when I'm human now?" I ask.
"Because you died and placed your soul in someone elses body. That's dangerous,Tris." he says.
"Ok,but what exactly did I do in the first place? All I remember is trying to save Tobias from killing himself again and I ran at him to push him out of the way. Second thing I know, I'm in Christina's body."
He takes a deep breath before saying "Have you ever heard the saying the love is stronger than death?"
"Yes,why? What does that have to do with what's happening?" I say immediately.
"It has alot to deal with it. Just before you ran at him, I heard you think that you would die every day for him and you didn't just say it but you meant it. You showed a great amout of love for him that when you lunged at him,you not only saved his life but you saved yours."
I look to the floor of the train car and back up at him
"She was right beside you and you didn't know it. She stood so close that it affected her and instead of going back to your normal self, your soul rested in her body and she lunged at Four." he says plainly.
I stand there staring at him trying to search my mind for any more questions that come to my mind but nothing comes.
I look outside the train car and notice the sun's starting to set. It feels like it has only been a few hours since I became human again or at least half human considering that this is not my body.
"So how-" I say turning to face but only to notice that he's gone. I sigh and look back out the train door once more and notice the large black Dauntless building in the distance.
I walk to the back of the train car and wait for the roof to start passing by before running out of the train car and landing onto the roof. As I hit the roof, I stumble forward and fall flat on the ground. I groan and sit upright and check my left knee. I pull my pants leg up and notice it's barely scraped up but is bleeding just a little. I decide to just forget about wiping away the blood and pull my pants leg back down. I get up and walk over to the edge of the building and look down. It has been over 2 years since I've been on top of this building as a human and jumping actually frightens me a little now because in my book, death changes EVERYTHING.
I close my eyes and take a deep breath. There is a warm, steady wind blowing that makes me somehow think of Amity. They always reminded me of warm people that are like the wind because they tend to go with the flow.
When I open my eyes,I run at full spead over the edge of the building and watch as windows grow above my head. I hit the net hard and I wince a little but I feel fine. I look around like some crazy person and start laughing a little. I need to do this more often.
I roll over the side of the net and land firmly on the ground. I walk around the small open area around the net and lean up against a stone wall and close my eyes. I imagine the day of the choosing ceremony. The day I chose Dauntless and first met Tobias. I remember the fall from the roof to the net and how amazing it was. The feeling of absolute adrenaline from the run and the burning feeling in my veins. Then there was Tobias. Waiting for me at the bottom so he can help me out of the net. I remember looking into his eyes and having the feeling of trust burst between us like a bomb exploding. I felt like I could trust him but I really didn't know if I did truly or not until the night of the kidnapping. The smell of lemongrass and sage burning my nostrils while the roaring of the chasm echoes down the dark, stone hallways. Everything felt like a nightmare but then it turned into a dream as soon as my rescuer came to save me from being thrown into the chasm. My rescuer was none other than the cruel and intimidating instructer with the dark blue eyes. Tobias not only saved me that day from Peter,Al,and Drew but he also saved me from myself. If it wasn't for him,I wouldn't be here right now.
"He saved me from myself." I whisper to myself.
I can still hear the whistling of the wind high above me. The warm air now seems to burn as I decide to head to Christina's apartment. I sigh a little before heading down the dark hallway toward a place I will now have to call home.
