chapter 5

Friday
october 13th

Dan held Adrians hand walking with him to school. Adrian might be 12 but he still doesn't like walking in town alone or without holding his brothers hand after the accident with their parents. It was a severely chilly day and their winter coats had been brought out yet again. Dans was black and long and Adrians was blue and had a fussy fake fur hood. Under the coat Dan was wearing the diner uniform, the record shop was being redecorated until next week so he was working in the diner all day until next monday. He liked working in the record shop but the diner was nicer, there were more people to talk to there while he was all alone other wise. He was the only shop attendant in the record shop and as it was closed during the weekends he had been forced to get a new job. He had met Sophia in algebra while he was still in school so when he told her he needed another job she had told him that the diner where she worked after class was hiring and thats how he ended up there.

"Dan?" Dan looked down at his little brother who was kicking rocks under his feet as they waited to cross the road.
"yes?"
"who were you talking to on the phone yesterday? I dont mean to snoop but you sounded very happy to be talk to them"
Dan smiled at his brother, always so considerate. He thought
"His name is Phil. I met him when Sam and I were hanging out the other day remember?"
"oh yeah, I remember" They both went quiet until Adrian spoke again.
"Dan?"
"yes Adrian"
"do you fancy Phil?"
Dan was a little starteled by the question, his brother knew that Dan was attracted to boys but he never thought about Phil like that; but now that he did.
"I might actually" Dan smiled. Adrian started skipping his steps.
"okay then I have to keep an eye on him so he is good enough for you"
Dan laughed and ruffled his brothers hair.
"sure kiddo, keep an eye on him for me"

7.00 am

"so how's Phil" Sam asked when Dan closed his locker. He shook his head.
"you know we arent dating right? we haven't gone to any dates yet just talked on the phone"
"yeah but I know something happened tuesday because you didnt straighten your hair before you came to get Ad, which means you didnt spend the night at home"
Dan blushed. Sam smiled and turned around.
"I knew it! I called that" Dan laughed and went out as well tying the white apron in the back grabbing a pencil and a notepad so he could collect servings.

"Hey Dan!" Dan tunred around to see Phil standing by the door. He went around the counter and up to Phil.
"hey what are you doing here"
"sorry, I had lunch and I wanted to see you, I missed you" Phil dragged his fingers under the shoulder band of Dans apron, Dan laughed.
"Phil it's been two days and weve talked on the phone both days"
Phil put his hand back in his pocket.
"well I haven't seen seen you in over 48 hours. And I don't do well with missing people. Especially not people I like"
"Dan take lunch" Sam said from the other end of the diner. "you've deserved it"
He glared at her before he grabbed Phils hand.
"I guess I'm having lunch with you today then, handsome" Phil smickered and Dan giggled. They walked hand in hand to the closest coffee shop.
"aren't you meant to eat at the diner so they make more?" Phil asked genuinely confused.
"I can see you've never worked in a diner. I'm not allowed to eat the diners food unless I work the night shift and pay for it all, hence I can eat anywhere else I'd like"
Phil nodded and placed their order.
"so..." they had sat down on a bench in the park to eat their sallads. "Tuesday - and wednesday - were, uhm, fun"
Dan nodded looking up and at Phil.
"Dan you know. I really mean it when I say I like you, like I think I'm gaining feelings for you"
"I know Phil, so am I"
Dan smiled widely showing off those dimples that drove the elder insane.
"I'd like to ask you out, so, would you go on a date with me?" Dan looked Phil in his eyes and nodded.
"I'd love to Phil. As well I know you probably want to take it slow but kissing you was magical and I'd rather not waste time being awkward so, may I kiss you?"
"yes Dan, you may"
They both leaned in and met. This kiss was so different to the ones they had previously shared. This one was filled with feelings and it sparked. It was definitely one of those butterflies and fireworks kisses. It ended with a few pecks and Phil stroking Dan cheek.
"you drive me insane, Dan Howell"
"you and I both, amazingphil"
"wait what?"
"I know you're a youtuber, my brother watched one of your videos yesterday."
"oh god, I'm sorry I didn't mean to keep that from you. I had a bunch of meetings today that why I said I had lunch. When in reality I actually just got done for today" Phil rushed out. Dan shifted so his torso was facing Phils he took his hands to calm him down.
"Phil. Phil. Calm down, it's fine. You haven't done anything wrong alright, the only thing is my brother is kinda ish obsessed with you, he sorta loves your channel, probably your biggest fan so to learn that you're the Phil guy will make him go crazy" They both laughed.
"Yeah but to know I'm a friend of yours isn't much to brag about is it?"
"youre right that is pathetic, only friends are just boring"
"what if we weren't just friends then?"
"now you're talking" Phil leaned so their faces were barely two inches appart.
"So Dan, will you go ona date with me?"
"with honour mr famous" they kissed again.

"so dominos at my place?" Dan asked before they broke away for him to go back to work again. "you can meet Ad"
"Ad?" Phil asked.
"oh yeah right, Ad is everyones nickaname for Adrian"
"ah, well it all sounds splendid. I'd love it"
"so I get off at 5.30 and then I have to pick him up from school"
"so I'll come and get you at 5.30 then"
Dan smiled and put his arms around Phils neck, Phils hands on his hips. They kissed softly.
"see you then gorgeous"
They broke away and Dan went back into the diner. Sam stood behind the counter clapping her hands.
"I saw that" she said and dan sighed with a smile shaking his head.

5.25 pm
"Dan! your boyfriend has arrived to steal you"
Phil laughed but loved to hear Sam call him Dans boyfriend. There was something magical in it something that made the butterflies in his stomach yet again insane. Dan then appeared from the back, he was wearing black ripped yeans and a red hoodie with white stripes.
he truely is gorgeous, Phil thought.
"Hello handsome"
"hey they, sexy" he whispered the last part in Dans ear so only he could hear him. Dan blushed and turned his head to say goodbye to Sam and Sophia. They were behind the desk hung over each other. The fact that they were cousins was so clear as their looks being nearly identical.
"Let's go get Ad"
Something Phil had found himself quite fond of was to walk hand in hand with Dan. They would have small talks about all different things, nothing big or important, no that they'd save for when they were alone. But these conversations meant learning all the little tiny details about Dans interests and feelings, opinions and such. He loved to get all the details of Dans mind. He loved Dan and all there was to know he wanted to know about him.

"So thats why I think the stars are like tiny glowing balls of wonder"
"you're such a little kid Dan"
"Kid? I'm almost 22" Phil laughed and put his arm around Dan shoulder instead of holding his hand.
"Didn't you like just turn 21? in June?"
"yeah yeah okay so maybe more of 21 then 22 but Im still a legal adult and I have been for a while"
they laughed and Phil kissed the top of Dans fluffy head.
"Why do you straighten your hair?"
"I look like a hobbit if I dont"
"I like you as a hobit its cute"
"maybe I'll stop then"
"hope so"

"DAN!" Adrian yelled as Dan went inside. Phil had stayed behind outside so that Dan could warn his younger brother of who was waiting for them to go home.
"Hey Ad" Dan hugged his brother before they went to get his jacket and bag. "So you know that youtuber that you so very much love"
"yeah? amazingphil? he is great. what about him"
"well, he is the same Phil as I met tuesday night. Remember the guy I met that I like"
"thats bullocks! no way!"
"yeah, he is standing out back wating for us, where dating now so he's coming home with us to have pizza"
"holy macaroni! do you think he'll sign my poster?"
"Im sure he will"

"Hello there Adrian, Ive heard alot about you"
"OMG! c-can I have a hug?"
Phil smiled and giggled.
"of course"
he got down on a knee as he was quite tall while Adrian himself was still very short. He was a good hugger just like his brother. Phil took Dans right hand and Adrian his left. They walked together back to the Howell residence.

"Dan? Can we have cheese?" Adrian asked as they eneteref the flat.
"Of course Kiddo" Dan ruffled his brothers curly brown hair. "How about mr. youtube, want your pepperoni again?"
"I think I'll go for the chesse as well actually. I remember it to be quite tasty"
Dan blushed and smiled looking into Phils eyes. Their colour was truely mesmerizing.
"ew!" Adran remarked "I love you both but get a room, will ya?"
they laughed and went into the lounge.
"Imma run and do my maths until the pizza arrives, it's all I have today"
"alright go do that"
Adrian went to his room and Phil sat down besides Dan on the couch.
"wow. He is a really good kid Dan"
"he is isnt he. He lightens my world completely I'd literally be nothing without him"
"awe. You're an amazing big brother Dan"
"and you're just an amazing person Phil"
"you're an amazing person-I-just-began-dating "
"that seems to long, wouldnt Boyfriend just be simpler?" Dan suggested and Phil smiled and kissed Dan.
"yes Dan, would you like to be my boyfriend"
"with pleasure Phil"
"well yeah of course you'll be pleasured" Phil tried to wink but ended up just blinking. "sorry I havent really learned how to do that"
Dan laughed. He was happy, he felt loved in a way that wasnt by a brother or a friend. He had gotten what he had been wishing for for all this time, a sexual and romantic parter through it all.
