Chapter 9- A thunder of heartbeats

A wind from the North blows,

bringing with it those who lie below.

With them, spreads the infection,

to what may be the darkest connection.

A crown forged from the tears of good and bad,

will choose the king whose army stands.

The light leads and the dark follows,

to the first jewel of the girl who borrowed

Then, the dark leads and the light follows,

to the send jewel of a man's true horror

A king shall be crowned where the first king stepped,

putting an end to their world's unrest.

To call her beautiful, would've been an understatement. Because as much as I hated to admit it, the new Upper Guard, Stella, was gorgeous. She was every villain's perfect idea of a female leader. Or to be more precise, a villain queen. That's what I feared, deep down. That Percy would somehow fall for her and that I might watch her become queen. And without a doubt, she would make my life hell for being his former lover. She was already making my life hell, from her very first day here at the palace. Apparently, she was the only contestant that had passed Percy's many, and fatal, tests. And today, she was named the head of the Upper Guard. She and Percy instantly clicked, they had great chemistry, I wasn't going to deny that. They laughed together like old friends, she made him smile. Smile. I haven't seen a genuine smile on his face in a very long time. It made some part of me happy for him, because I will always love him, but it also made me jealous. Maybe they will never be together, maybe I'll never have to worry about that. Nevertheless, Stella hated me with a burning passion, I can see it in her eyes. A cat waiting to pounce on it's mea who happened to be a hopeless mouse lost in this world. That's what I've become. Hopeless and weak.

She could only hear her heartbeat. She could only hear the fast-paced and terrified pumps echoing in her body, a sound like thunder in her ears. A thunder of heartbeats. But alongside the fear that caged her, deep inside, buried below the horror, was pain.

Not physical pain, but heartbreak. Pain that came because of love, in all of it's kinds. A failed love, but not one she expected to put her in a cold and dark cell, with her wrists chained above her, to the wall, leaving her legs to dangle in the air.

It hurt, coming from him. It hurt too much. She knew he could hurt her; she knew he would. But not like this. Not like hanging her up like an animal to be slaughtered, slowly. She had begged him. Begged him to spare her just this once, but there was no mercy in him sometimes. Or even all times. There was nothing but a void of darkness and misery living in him, yet, she still believed in him. She still believed he could change.

She didn't believe in good. No, good ad betrayed her once, she won't let it happen again. She believed he could make something else of the darkness. Something merciful and beautiful, yet powerful, unrivaled and untamed.
