she did not belong
with the people of the day
and their deadlines
social appearances
fake words
it was only night
only as she watched the sun
bleed into the horizon
as the city lights flared to life
that she herself came alive
as if she could make up
for the time she lost
as she hid from the people
who loved the light.
the moon
was her friend
as she twisted,
turned.
as the world fell silent
and she became loud
the starlight making her smile
the cool darkness lifting her
up, over the boundaries
the fences
that were tucked away in her mind.
she had never belonged
with the people of the day
she was the one
who chose the night-
confusing and beautiful
over the harsh,
artificially bright
rays of sun
