parents always get it wrong.

they say we're a problem that needs a strong hand.

we've grown up with too much technology, they say

that all we are is coffee and swearing and disrespect.

but we know what it really is.

because, really, our generation is a whole lot deeper.

we've grown up being looked down upon

being told we were too young to understand

yet we are the ones growing up with problems.

knowing that 1 of 12 of our friends want to kill themselves.

having true anxiety issues and mental disorders

being filled with hope of being free and doing what we want

and growing up and losing that feeling

and ending up hoping instead to not live on the streets.

we've seen unemployment and loss and hunger

we've seen wars and gruesome acts of violence

we've been ignored by our parents and grandparents

because they all see us as babies

unaware and oblivious.

but no.

this is the age of having to fight for our rights.

this is the age of discrimination.

this is the age of girls fighting for control over their bodies.

this is the age of being disrespected and scorned for being a teenager.

this is the age of our planet being polluted,

and this is the age of those parents,

that older generation,

looking down and calling us "just kids".

saying that we don't understand the world yet.

them forcing us to grow up early.

they have the nerve to try and force us into what we do

or what we believe in.

this is the age of being looked over for liking one thing or another

this is the age of our generation understanding all of this!

all of the others reading, they relate

because they've been told to get over their panic attacks.

they've been told they're wrong for their opinions.

they've been told that they have to grow up a certain way

they've been told depression is just a phase

and they've been told what to say and think.

so here's to the parents:

fuck you.

because our generation has known for a while

how wrong it is to grow up like this,

and that you've only ever been

horribly, horribly wrong.
