...Okay, but seriously, why haven't I found anything for Gay!Reynico? Is Male!Reyna x Nico even a thing? 'Cause I was able to find some stuff for romantic Reynico as the homophobic mess that it is, but nothing for the idea of a male Reyna with Nico. Reynico really seems to have nothing going for it other than heteronormativity and homophobia.
Okay, MAYBE I'm exaggerating. Gay!Reynico isn't too bad. I mean, it's not homophobic anymore, and maybe people would have been betting that Reynico was meant to be endgame had Reyna been a guy. But I don't know, I still find no reason for it to exist. There are plenty of guys you can ship Nico with, hell he already has a boyfriend. And if you don't like Solangelo, you can always ship Percico, Jasico, Valdangelo, or Frank x Nico. Hell, people ship other things besides these ships and go all out with random guys to ship Nico with. I ship Nico with Magnus without the least bit of shame. (MAGNICO IS STILL SO GOOD). If we had no boys to ship Nico with, that'd be one thing, but there's enough boys to ship Nico with already.
What exactly is so romantic about Reynico that no other guy ship with Nico can compare? Nico has a boyfriend AND had a crush on Percy, so that's already way more romantic than Reynico. And Jasico is just as platonic as Reynico is. I feel like Gay!Reynico still suffers from the heteronormativity regular Reynico has; it's the assumption that Reyna and Nico's bond HAD to be romantic, buuuuut it's homophobic to ship Nico with a girl, so making Reyna a guy should work. But here's the thing, gay or not, Reynico was written to be a platonic bond. It was meant to be about two people finding each other and finding company in each other despite their rocky lives, without any romantic cliches.
Gay!Reynico doesn't have the terrible problems that Reynico has, it's not homophobic anymore. But it definitely applies on being an unnecessary ship, and you all know what score those ships tend to get.
