The cool night breeze ruffled my tattered clothing and blew hard against my wings, not like I wasn't used to it from the flying out of the lab. I stared at the night skies, keeping my wings outstretched to protect Scarlett from the cool winds. My hair flew wild, sometimes brushing against my cool skin. I looked down at my clothes once again. My clothes were completely tattered but I could still make out the dress. College must have changed me because I was wearing a dress filled with colours and diamantes. I remember my childhood when I wore T-shirts and Shorts with not a dress in sight. A tear drips from my eye as I blink with the memory of my beloved parents and older brother. We weren't poor and we weren't rich. We all lived a simple life by the frozen lake and went skating during the weekends and holidays. I missed them dearly and I missed them all.
I stood up shakily and turned to look at Scarlett. She can last until I come back, I thought. I tucked my wings in and stretched them again to get them going. Then I bent my knees and shot off into the sky with the wind whipping against my face. I realized that Scarlett was a Vampire and she would be very hungry by now. I flew as fast as I could to the village on the horizon. The moon shone down onto the ground and reflected against the sand. With the light combined with the wind I was almost blinded. I was close to missing the pilgrims below me resting with their tents. Bad idea to sleep at night, they should have kept going when it was cool, I thought. I flew down lightly careful not to make any noise. One of the men had a knife resting beside him and another had an empty bag in his hand. I took the knife and went over the man with the bag. I slit his throat quietly making sure to not make a sound. I cut the artery on the neck and used the bag to hold the blood. I took as much as I dared and moved onto the next man. I slit his throat as well but it made a sound as he awoke and made a small sound before dying. I quickly got some blood from him and turned around to look for something to keep the blood cool. As I turned around another man was standing and staring at me. I obviously had my wings out as he was pointing at them. I whispered, "run..." He ran off without another move from me towards the town. I decided not to chase him so I just flew back to where Scarlett was lying. She was awake and staring up at the sky looking for me. I shot down to the ground and landed softly in front of her. She opened her mouth but I presented the bags to her and she licked her lips in hunger.
"Where did you get that?" She asked looking into my eyes.
"There were some travellers heading towards the town." I replied staring into her eyes. They lit up with horror and before I could say anything I yelled, "Don't worry I only killed 2 out of the 20 there and you need to eat. We would have had to do it eventually."
She looked down at the ground and took the bags from me. She bared her fangs and punctured holes in the bag. I looked away and stared at the stars up above us shining down to the sands.
