Once Tina and Queenie were out of sight, _____ turned around and went to grab the only thing from her clothes yesterday that was in a wearable quality: her hat. It was a simple black hat, but she liked the style. She was wearing a long black skirt, a white blouse and a simple black coat that Tina was letting her borrow, but she wanted to add something of her own. Newt watched her carefully before asking, "Where are you going?"

"I told you, I'm going to look for answers," _____ told Newt, looking over at him. "Listen, I think I'll have a better chance of remembering something by actually getting out there. I can't expect to trigger any memories sitting around here in an unfamiliar place."

Newt wanted to go with her, even if she insisted before that she could do it on her own. Something about her made him want to look out for her and protect her. He still blamed himself for this in the first place, and he wanted answers as much as she did. "Let me come with you, at least. I don't want to be useless when I got you into this mess, so let me help out, even just a little bit."

"Listen, Mister Scamander-"

"Call me Newt," he insisted again, just as he had the night before. "Remember? Last night, I told you to call me Newt, and I really do want to help you."

_____ sighed. "Newt, I just... I feel like I need to be alone for this. I'm worried that if I walk around New York with anyone else, my mind won't be as focused. Especially if I'm with you."

As soon as Newt was about to ask what she meant by that, she turned a shade of pink and pulled her hat down. "I'm going right now, and that's that. That's just the way things are, Newt. I'm sorry."

_____ grabbed the doorknob and left the apartment, heading down the stairs. Newt followed her, oblivious of the noise he was making and forgetting the "no-men" rule at Tina's apartment complex.

"Please, at least let me be there in complete silence. I won't say a word, I just want to look out for you to make sure you don't get into any more trouble. I mean, look, you're still limping. This is the least I can do."

_____ stopped in her tracks and turned to Newt, who was standing at the middle of the staircase. He wasn't wrong, she was still sore from all the injuries she got yesterday, and a bruise was beginning to form on her forehead. "Why do you insist on following me? I don't think I'm going to hurt myself."

"I just want to make sure that you'll be okay. You never know what's going to happen."

_____ finally gave in, letting out a frustrated grunt. Obviously, Newt wasn't going to give in anytime soon, and she was getting tired of keeping the argument anyways. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to have him around anyways, and maybe he wouldn't be too much of a distraction if he kept his distance. "Fine! Fine, you can come with! Is that what you wanted to hear? Now, come on, I want to get out there."

Newt couldn't help but smile, but after she shouted that, he heard a door open and he recognized the voice. "Who's making all that noise?" an older woman's voice asked. Newt gave _____ an alarmed look and put a finger to his lips, and _____ got the hint.

"Sorry, I was having a bit of an altercation with my roommate," _____ quickly told the woman. "I just got here yesterday, and the room arrangement isn't what I'd hoped it would be."

"I thought I heard a man's voice," she continued, and she met eyes with _____. "Is there a man up there?"

_____ looked up at Newt and he shook his head, hoping that she could come up with something good. "No, it's just my roommate. She's a little sick, so her voice sounds a little strange."

The woman raised a suspicious eyebrow but didn't push it further. "Remember the rules, or else I will end your lease." She warned before closing the door.

Newt walked down the stairs quietly and they both exited before _____ began to ask questions. "Who was that woman? Why did she want to know if there were men? What does she have against them?"

Newt tried to answer to the best of his knowledge. "Her name is Mrs. Esposito, she's Tina's landlord. I have no idea why she doesn't like men in the building, but it's been a rule for as long as I can remember. I forgot about it, but I need to keep quiet when we're in the hallways."

"Probably good we didn't keep that argument going then," _____ pointed out. "Alright, I only agreed to let you come because you said you would be quiet. Keep your distance and stay quiet. I just want to focus."

Newt nodded, agreeing. Not exactly what he wanted, but it was better than nothing. He felt better about her going around if he could follow her, that was he could have the opportunity to keep her safe. "You won't even know I'm here."

"Good," she said. Then, quietly, "Thank you, Newt. I know I've been difficult, but it's just... I just want to remember who I am." Before Newt could have a chance to say something back, _____ turned around, walking away. She didn't know where she was going, but she hoped that something would spark a memory.

And hope was all she had. Hope, and Newt, of course.
