Chapter 29
❇ Ava Johnson ❇
"Is everyone here?" The substitute teacher yelled over the talkative class. Uhm, there are more than eight empty seats and she asks such questions.
"I said, is everyone here!?" She yelled once more. I honestly feel sorry for her. Man this genera- I mean my generation is totally messed up. We are too chilled for life man, we're our own presidents. But it's good and bad I guess, cos we need Jesus but at the same time Jesus doesn't need us.
"I was said to tell you about a Math test that's gonna take place on Tuesday next week. Please be sure to cover pages 67 to 144! It will all be there!" She hollered.
The class didn't even budge as some students cautiously took notes, me being one of them. C'mon I don't want to fail. The bell rang and the sub cried out a prayer.
Not our fault she wants to become a teacher.

"Right, so this year we are having a play at school and I, your drama teacher should choose 10 eleventh graders to take part in it. I know a few of you who'd do well. We're giving important roles to you guys and the twelfth graders so let's announce them." Mrs. Gregory said.
I saw everyone instantly cringing at the idea. We never really liked plays.
"The play is Romeo and Juliet!"
As soon as she said that, everyone started groaning and complaining. "Excuse me, but isn't there supposed to be an audition for this? Since most of us don't wanna do it?" Brittany asked, she always entertains the class by talking back.
My drama teacher shook her head taking out a book from her desk. "These are the 10 people and their roles, drum roll please."
A few stomps and hand claps lazily scattered across the room. Of course we don't wanna do it!
"4 Lilian Truffer as Lady Capulet, 5 Shawn Dohse as Sir Capulet." She announced, Jen and I snickered at the sight of Shawn in tights.
"6 Emily as Lady Montague, 7 Marcus as Tybalt." Alright this is crazy!
"-8 Cody Stephenson as Romeo." This time the whole class roared with laughter, this play is going to be interesting. "Yes, we're not in the play, so then we'll have time to plan for our vacation." Jen whispered. But Cody was the ninth person announced wasn't he?
"- And then Juliet will be played by 9 Ava Johnson, alright take out your Macbeth notes." She said.
She said, she said what? My soul has been ripped from my eyes as they stared at the white board in horror. This can't be it. Soon fingers were snapping me out of my reverie. "I guess I spoke too soon Juliet." Jennifer laughed nudging me in my side.
For the rest of the day I was thinking of excuses to tell Mrs. Gregory, I can't be Juliet, no ways. With Cody as Romeo? Everything is going to be awkward.
What about our friendship, and Jen? Oh my God what about Jen? She has a thing for Cody don't she? I have to fix this.
I speed walked to Mrs. Gregory's class after school. I knocked on her door.
"Yes? Oh Ava, the official practice is tomorrow dear." She kindly said, watching me over her glasses.
"That's not quite the reason why I'm here." I said pulling an awkward face. "Then what are you here for?" She was marking papers so I could tell she was busy.
"Look Ava, you have potential. Really great acting skills and I know you're here to disengage yourself from the play but I'm afraid that's impossible." That's all she needed to say to make my throat dry.
Just great. I left not wanting to disturb anymore further.
I carried my legs lazily out of the building and walked my way to Austins car. I said nothing on our way back home.
My life falling apart. I ran upstairs, threw my school bag on my bed, shut the door, grabbed my pillow and yelled into it.
I'm so angry! I just, I just no! I felt my phone buzz and I glared at it.
"What do you want?" I said bitterly.
"Gee, hello to you too."
"I'm sorry, what's up Cody?"
"I'm coming over in five, be ready. I'll explain later." He said and just like that he disconnected the call. Wow, I feel so free. That being said I tied my hair in a high pony tail.
I took off my top, bra and jeans. Instead I put on leggings, uggboots and an oversized baby pink sweater. Nipples my ass.
The weather is quite chilly today, so fuck off. Fuck everyone, I just have to go on with whatever faith has for me. If they get upset, life goes on.
"Ava!" I heard someone yell from downstairs. And I rolled my eyes. How is he here already? "Your friend Cody is at the door." Austin said, taking a bite out of his apple. I checked my phone's battery percentage and it was on a sad 11%.
Before I could get out Austin pulled me aside. "Be here before seven or else we'd have trouble." He whispered.
I faked a smile and walked out only to meet Cody standing outside his car. "What's up?" I asked as I neared him. He gave me a grin and opened the car door.
~°~°~°~°
"Yeah I guess." He said, holding two files in his hands.
Both seated at a local restaurant, waiting for our orders. It turns out the main characters get their lines before the rest. Practice until you know it off by heart.
"You know we could've just stayed at my place and discussed this there." I argued. Like I don't understand why he had to drag me 30 miles away from home just to give me my recital papers. "Hey, I was hungry so I figured you'd be too." He explained.
I'm not complaining. The only thing I ever ate today was cereal and a lemon flavoured gummy strip I got from Jack.
An elderly lady came to our table with our food. My delicious calamari and cheese burger looking at me with desire. "A strawberry milkshake young man and a passion fruit lemonade for your lady." She said smiling.
"You have it wrong we're just friends." I defended. Gee me dating Cody? Jennifer would be in ICU. "Friends who like doing naughty things." He smirked eating a fry.
The fuck are you on about boy?
"Well let me not disturb." She walked away.
The first thing I did was cut my burger in 4 pieces and dug into my calamari that was thrown with lime juice and creamy mushroom sauce.
My eyes literally rolled back, a few soft groans leaving my mouth. Guys the food here is incredible.
Cody ate his fries and buffalo wings peacefully. "I see you're enjoying." He said wiping his hands with a napkin and slurping my lemonade. Damn, told you not to finish your drink. I said in my head.
I nodded.
"Don't nod, use words."
"Yes I am thank you." I said softly and put the last piece of calamari in my mouth. What a meal you fat pig.
I wiped off my mouth with a napkin and sighed, looking at Cody. We stared in each other's eyes intensely. "What?" I asked smiling.
He looked to his side and ran a hand through his hair. He grinned. "C'mon, I have something to show you."
He threw money on our table and grabbed my hand. We both rushed to his car hand in hand.
"Here you go my lady." He chukled, opening the door for me remembering what the old waitress had said. "Shut up, Romeo." I retorted smirking and entering the car.
Happiness, that's what I feel.
