Chapter 17

The moment seemed to freeze. The moment was the boundary between my life and my sudden death. Then immediately my mind cranked. My brain filled through my memories.

I remember when I almost met death. I was eight, too young to be in the reaping. I watched my cousin’s last reaping. She was Hauden, a really close cousin. She was like our big sister, she always looked after me and Suezette when our parents scurried off to their work.

She’s tall, and she has a pretty face. She’s always scared of reapings, and I always found it funny before, as she cried her eyes out the night before the reaping. Now I understand why.

We were standing there, waiting as the mayor reading off his paper. The escort picks the female tribute. And we were happy to hear that it is not Hauden. Then the escort picks the male tribute. Everything happened so fast, and we went home, and we were about to celebrate. Hauden’s all smiles, knowing that her reaping dreads have been put to an end.

We were playing catch, and Suezette and me were so happy for Hauden, and Hauden threw too far, it fell into the forest. My sister hushed, for it was her favorite ball.

“I’ll get it guys, don’t worry,” Hauden said. She sighed as she crept up to the fence, the highly electrified fence.

“No, I’m smaller, I’ll just get it,” I say. They just nodded, and looked over the area, so no one will see us. The forest is restricted, and the highly electrified fences keep intruders, wild animals, and people who want to escape out, or in.

I trotted along the path, just a few steps to the fence. Then something happened. A step towards the fence, I tripped.

The current of the electricity was an inch towards my skin, when a force shoved me away from my immediate death.

My mother was worried sick. They said I almost fell into the electric fence, and I will be surely dead, if it was not for Hauden. We never really felt like celebrating that night, and I never had sleep that night too, thinking I could’ve been dead, and I worried so much.

And now here I am, I probably am the unluckiest tribute of all Hunger Games history, throwing up in a career’s back and all.

“What the?” Cato shouted as my puke fell down. I was ready for Cato’s sword, for Glimmer’s arrow, and for Clove’s knives.

Clove had this sadistic grin, which is really weird for someone who was just bathed in vomit, and she was ready to aim at me, yelling swears and names, and I saw her in training. She never misses.

Marvel’s eyes are screaming at me. Screaming ‘run Emilia!’. I can’t move a muscle. I can’t even shout nor speak. All I could do is stare.

“Let me, Clove.” Glimmer said, pushing the little girl aside. Clove charges to argue, but Cato nods, “Just wash up. You’re stinking.”

Clove runs off, showing me her favorite (probably) finger. Glimmer charges her bow and arrow, Marvel’s looking quite… confident? Could it be?

I was badly hurt. Badly stunned and badly angry. I was ready to shout at Marvel, to get down and kill him myself. How dare he smile like that while I’m going to be dead in a matter of seconds?

Glimmer faces me, and she aims at me. I was ready for the reap of flesh when Glimmer’s arrow missed me.

“O darn!” Glimmer said. The other careers just went to Clove, and it was just me, Marvel and Glimmer. Glimmer’s arrows kept missing me, until Cato, Clove and Corral were out of sight.

“Listen kid, for Marvel, I’m going to spare you. But listen, go to the other direction. Run off now. Take care Emilia, take care of Marvel’s baby!” She said. Marvel nodded, while he helped me to get down. I gave him a kiss. “Run Emilia, and meet me near the cornucopia,” Marvel said.

I need not be told twice. I sprinted off.

Glimmer knew. Glimmer knew the thing between me and Marvel. And she understood.
