JULY 2009.

after piano class finished, yoongi and alex sat beside one another, waiting for their parents to arrive. they waited outside on a wooden bench outside of the building.

to their surprise, their parents were later than usual.

the chilly evening-summer winds blew, as little alex brought her knees up to her chest, hugging them, trying to keep herself warm. meanwhile, yoongi was half asleep.

they only decided to stay together since they didn't really talk to anyone else.

after some comfortable silence, alex spoke up. "i wonder why our parents are so late today." she said.

yoongi huffed out a breath, "it's probably just traffic, or something."

as they sat in silence, the sounds of cars passing by on the streets and people walking around were heard around them.

so it really wasn't a silence.

alex wiggled her legs back and fourth, looking down as she does so. meanwhile, yoongi was staring into the distance, his chin on his palm.

from her observation, alex found that yoongi did that quite often. he would always space out, and just stare into the distance. his expression would be complicated to distinguish; no one could understand what goes on in his head.

as friends, alex thought that she should ask him about it.

wait, are they even friends?

(play media)

suddenly, a brilliant idea came up in alex's head. it was pretty random, but she thought it'd be fun to do.

"hey," alex began, a grin slowly grazing upon her lips. "let's come up with nicknames for each other!" she says excitedly.

yoongi furrowed his eyebrows slightly. that request was unexpected, and it was something he wasn't used to, nor done before.

"um," yoongi pauses, "sure...?"

alex clapped her hands together in excitement, giggling with a cute smile that everyone adored.

her smile was something everyone loved about her,
including yoongi.

"okay, okay." she stops giggling, and looks up, in thought. yoongi watches her silently, in awe. internally, he tries to deny himself from thinking the girl was cute, but there was no reason to deny it.

"i'll call you...yeon kimin." alex says, laughing after. "is that okay?"

yoongi thinks for a second, before letting out a slight, but genuine smile. "why would you call me that?"

alex shrugs. "i don't know, it's fun to say. yeon kimmin~" she repeats the nickname, chuckling at herself.

"okay, now you come up with a nickname for me." alex pokes his shoulder, and yoongi looks up in thought.

yoongi shrugs, "i'm not really sure."

alex pouts, but comes up with something. "if it helps, my full name is alexandrite." after saying so, yoongi raises his eyebrows.

"the gemstone?" he questions, his eyes glowing with interest. alex giggles, "yeah."

yoongi lets out a little gasp, "i can call you gemstone!"

the two smile at each other, as they laugh about their random, and ridiculous nicknames for each other.

"aigoo." alex sighs, a smile still evident on her lips. their laughter dies down, as they stare ahead of them.

"i've never done these kinds of things before..." yoongi admits,  his voice coming out soft. alex chuckles, "i guess i'll be the first, then."

yoongi looks at her with a bewildered expression, but changes it when he sees her making a goofy face. his frown turns upside down, as he lets out a snort.

"what is that?" he says with a laugh. alex giggles, "my pretty face."

yoongi scoffs, shaking his head. "this girl." he murmrs.

suddenly, two cars pull up into the parking lot, and those to cars belonged to alex and yoongi's parents.

the two stood up from the bench, and gave each other a look.

in unison, they say, "what a coincidence."

as alex was in the car driving home with her father, he breaks the silence with a question.

"lexi," he calls her name by his nickname, looking at her through the rear view mirror. the girl breaks her gaze from the window, looking at her father.

"are you close with that boy?" he questions, with a hint of suspicion in his voice. alex nods, a cute smile forming her lips, "yes."

her father hums, "i see."

alex looks at her father's eyes in the rear view mirror, and noticed he was frowning. she frowned as well, as she proceeded with her own question.

"why do you ask, father?" she asks, tilting her head. he lets out a fake chuckle, "no reason, sweetie."

he glances at his daughter over his shoulder, "just don't get too attached to him, okay?"
