kiara - 1 year later

a loud splash startles me from in the bathroom. i'm perched at the counter perfecting my makeup because i have nothing better to do with my life. and sometimes i need the alone time, but that is certainly not what i am getting.

i rush out into the kitchen where bailey is sat in her high chair. her bottle knocked on the floor and milk everywhere. i literally hadn't even been in the bathroom for more than thirty seconds.

she looks up at me and giggles innocently.

"baby," i whine. "why'd you knock your bottle over?"

she just stares at me; being only nine months old she can't really talk. i grab a towel and some clorox wipes and start cleaning the milk up. pumped this shit for nothing.

bailey watches me as i throw the wipes away and walk to the laundry room to throw the towel in the washer. i start it up and leave the laundry room to go back to bailey.

i reach into the fridge and grab out the bottle that i had ready for her lunch. guess i'll just have to give it to her now.

i pick her up and take her into the spacious master bathroom with me. i lay out an old blanket and set her down on it, handing her her bottle so she can eat while i'm finishing up.

i pull my hair up into a cute but messy bun and put all of my appliances away along with my makeup.

i glance over at bailey and her eyes are still wide open. she never falls asleep while eating. i bend down and pick her up, balancing her on my hip as i walk to the linen closet in the hallway.

"it's time for mommy to give you bath," i say grabbing out the baby bather and placing it in the tub.

i fill the tub up with warm water and place her in the bath. her bottom lip quivers as i start to cup water in my hands and pour it in her dark curly hair.

"don't make that face at me, baby girl, you know i have to do this," i say not daring to look at her puppy dog eyes and shaking lip.

i squirt the clear baby soap into my hands and lather it up, smoothing it out all over her delicate skin. her eyes become droopy and that makes it easier for me to wash the rest of her body.

her eyes are fully shut by the time i scoop her out of the bathtub and wrap her in a purple towel. i take her into her room and put her into a diaper before sliding her tiny legs into a pastel onesie.

i peck her forehead and lay her down in her crib, pulling the small blanket up to her chest. she stirs but her eyes stay closed.

i sigh right before walking out of her room. "i love you, sweet girl."

i turn her light out and shut the door to the nursery as i walk back to my bedroom.

my thoughts take over as i lay down.

i wish he was next to me in my bed. i wish he knew what this life was offering him. there's no way to stop thinking about him. i mean i take care of his daughter for god's sake.

tears make their way to my eyes and i can't help but let a few fall. this is how it has to be.

a loud cry slices through the air and i jump up to rush to bailey's room.

i pick her up and sway her in my arms. "sh, sh, sh. it's alright."

she coos when she sees my face and i smile down at her. her toothless grin almost makes me cry but it's her dark luscious curls and button nose that send me over the edge.

  she looks just like him.
