we've been driving for almost three hours now. i don't where we're going or where we are, i just know i have to get her away. out of there.
kiara's asleep, her arm propped on the armrest next to the seat and her head is rested on her arm, dried tears stain her cheeks. bailey is treading on thin ice when it comes to keeping her eyelids open.
it's about noon but i'm tired and i don't see us getting to our destination anytime soon. wherever that is.
kiara stirs next to me in her seat and suddenly she's sat up right, an unsettling look smothering her unusually pale face.
"you okay?" i ask as i watch her and the road.
she nods her head then shakes it side to side. "pull the car over."
i'm immediate to find an area to pull over and ease to a stop. she swings her door open and hardly makes it before vomiting once again. she slumps back into her seat and i hand her the water bottle from the cupholder. she graciously takes it and then digs around for a piece of gum.
"feel better now?" i question, a small smile cracking on my lips.
"yeah, i'm fine. must just be some bug, or from all the stress," she shrugs and we continue driving.
she doesn't seem to think it's a bug, though, and i can tell by the way her eyes droop. she puts on this facade that's very easy to see through.
i grab her hand with my free one and pull it into my lap. she fiddles with my fingers, a nervous tic that compulsively happens once in a while.
"take a right here," she blurts and i think we've found somewhere to stop for today.
but then we keep going for thirty minutes and i've lost hope of stopping any time soon.
10:36 pm
we've made it to salt lake city, utah.
kiara is passed out in the passengers seat and bailey is asleep as well after having a sippy cup of milk and some puffs to eat. my eyes drift every so often, my adrenaline the only thing keeping them open. i finally realize i need to stop at a hotel before we get into an accident.
i stop at the nicest looking hotel i can find and lock the car before walking up to the front desk.
the woman behind the counter dreadfully looks up at me. "double or single?"
i scoff a little and then just roll my eyes at her rudeness. "single, please."
"that's one ninety-five for a night. the latest check out is at eleven," she says typing information into her computer.
i pay for the room and the front desk lady hands me the rooms key cards along with a little pamphlet on the hotel.
i rush back out to the car to retrieve kiara and bailey. i open the passenger door and kiara looks startled. her eyes shoot open and she grabs my arm.
"hey, hey, it's okay," i try to calm her down as i pull her head into my stomach and smooth out her hair.
"where are we?" she asks, her voice dry from being asleep for so long.
"salt lake city. i had to stop at a hotel because i kept falling drifting off and i didn't want to get in an accident," i tell her as she undoes her seat belt and stands up next to me.
"okay, lemme get bailey," she mumbles and i stop her.
"no you're tired, i'll get bailey. just wait right there, okay?"
she nods her head with no hesitation and i go to the backseat, gently unstrapping bailey, praying to god that she doesn't wake up. i grab her diaper bag as well and then kiara and i make our way back into the hotel.
i hand kiara our room key and she scans it on the door near the handle. we walk in and the room is decently nice. a large king sits in the middle of a graciously sized room, a tv and stand are at the front and a small desk is placed over by the window.
kiara plops down on the bed and turns the tv on.
"babe, where are we going to put bailey?" i ask, realizing that there really isn't a good place for her.
"just lay her next to me, i slept practically the whole day so i think i'm just gonna watch tv while you sleep," she shrugs and i ever so slightly hand bailey off to her. the girls a heavy sleeper, just like her mom.
kiara lays bailey on the bed next to her, in between us, and i lay on the opposite side, drifting off as soon as my head hits the pillow.
