"Castiel, come home."
The rebellious angel stood defiant, his blade in hand and anger in his piercing blue eyes.
"You know heaven isn't home to me anymore, Y/N."
"It was once. We fought side by side, Castiel. You led armies! And now you risk it all for the Winchesters!"
"Humans aren't below us!"
"That's not what I'm saying!"
My borderline blasphemous words caught us both by surprise. I tried to recover.
"I'm saying that your place is in heaven."
Castiel shook his head, smiling slightly.
"You just admitted that humans aren't the lowly creatures the others declare them to be."
"What of it, Castiel? It doesn't matter what I think. I have orders."
Castiel tentatively stepped closer, moonlight falling on his face through the rotted roof above us.
"Then why haven't you fought me by now?"
I stood, debating about the best course of action. By far, the safest would be to take Castiel by force back to heaven, but I was conflicted. I knew Castiel, we have fought side by side for centuries and as much as I hate to say it, he had a point. Humans did not get as much credit as they deserve and were being treated unjustly. Since Castiel has rebelled, I had been doubting my orders, a new experience for me. A part of me had wondered if I was becoming to attached to him, like what the humans would call a crush. Castiel must have noticed the tension in my face.
"Y/N, heaven is corrupted and doing the wrong thing. It's not so much as rebelling as dong the right thing independently. Stand with me and the Winchesters to protect humans from the unjustness of the other angels!"
I bit my lip, deliberating. If I did this and got caught, the consequences would be very severe. But seeing Castiel so vehemently defend them made me question the blindness of my faith. I always believed in doing the right thing, maybe the right path had strayed from those running heaven.
"Will you let me make preparations to leave?"
Castiel looked surprised, "You are going to rebel."
I gave him a slight smile, "I was thinking more of doing the right thing independently."
He returned my smile, then looked troubled.
"What is it, Castiel?" I questioned.
"The Winchesters will not trust you at first," he said apologetically.
"Understandable. I was ordered to deliver them to angels who would hurt him. I will accept any ill treatment with the grace my brothers have left behind."
He nodded and disappeared, leaving me alone to contemplate the meaning of my decision. I collected what research I could get my hands on and called for Castiel. He showed me to the bunker, where I was finally face to face with the infamous Winchesters.
"Sam and Dean, this is Y/N. She has joined our side."
As expected, there was doubt written all over their faces.
"Why should we trust you?" The one I assumed was Dean asked me.
"I thought heaven was always going to be my home, but recently it has lost that meaning in its corruption. I'm sure you two understand how it feels to have a home taken from you. I am angry with the angels who have done this. If you do not trust me, trust the shared anger we have for those responsible for so many tragedies."
Sam and Dean shared a meaningful look, then Sam responded.
"Well, then, welcome to the team."
I nodded, "Thank you. I have a brought some sort of a peace offering."
Dean craned his neck, trying to see in my bag, "What is it?"
I set the bag in a wooden table and spread out papers.
"These are new sigils."
"New? What do you mean?" Sam asked, confused.
"Y/N's job in heaven was to create new sigils and rituals," Castiel answered.
"The ones you use today were mostly my design. They were a bit like the pest control you have down here."
"Except for monsters?" asked Sam.
"Exactly. These are what I could grab from the sigils that were turned down."
Dean scoffed, "So they don't work? That's useful."
I straightened up, indignant.
"My sigils always work. They were rejected because they work on angels."
Dean put up his hands, "Okay, sorry. What do they do?"
I pointed at a circular one with rings of symbols, "That one extends the potency of a hot fire." My finger moved to one shaped almost like an upside down tree, "That one, when painted on a map and doused with blood of another angel, will track an angel. You just have to put its name... here." I explained pointing to the center. "I have written down instructions and more explanations, but the are in Enochian."
I looked at the three men looking at the papers with wide eyes. Even Castiel seemed surprised. However, I saw his expression turn into one of concern.
"They will find you to recover these and kill you."
"I'm counting on it. This one right here is engraved on my vessels ribs." I pointed to a series of spiraling words. "It puts my location, when tracked, wherever I want it to be."
Dean stepped back and eyed me with admiration
"You've set a trap."
"Exactly. You can use it or not, your choice."
They went to go decide whether or not to use my trap, while I started translating my instructions. After a few minutes, they came back with a decision.
"We've decided to use the trap," Sam told me.
"Yeah, but we have one condition," Dean interrupted.
"I thought there might be. What is it?"
"You have to stay here," Dean said.
"That is not a good idea," I protested, "What if you need my help?"
Dean scoffed, "We'll be fine. We already have an angel and you might have heard what we are capable of."
I could see they were not going to budge on this decision, so I decided to let it go.
"Fine, I agree to your terms."
"Great, now tell us about the trap."
I told them about the trap as well as I could, wanting them to stay safe, especially Castiel. Two hours later, I was alone in their home, which they called the "bunker". I sat nervously on a chair, thinking about what could be happening. Of course I knew they were a good team and had done great things, but would that be enough? Angels were powerful and there was only Castiel and two humans. I began to regret giving in so easily. The minutes ticked by and I couldn't help thinking that the might be Castiel's last if I didn't help him. Finally, I transported to the spot of the sigil, not trusting my earlier judgement. My eyes widened as I looked at the wreckage in front of me. Sam had been thrown into a bookshelf of the old house and was groaning softly and Dean was on his side to my left, not moving. I healed them both, Dean unresponsive, but Sam grabbed my arm and whispered, his voice cracking with pain,
"Castiel."
With that one word, my heart dropped. He was in danger. I firmly grasped him back.
"Where?" I asked.
He pointed to the room to our left where I flew into immediately. To my horror, I saw an angel advancing on Castiel, who was on the ground, bleeding and bruised. My eyes snapped to the blade in the angel coming for Castiel and I kept into action. I tackled the angel from the side, knocking the blade out of his hand. I rolled to it, picked it up and turned back to the angel, who was also on his feet.
"Don't come any closer or I will kill you," I warned, my voice low and threatening.
"Y/N, it really is true. I'm sorry but I have to do this."
He came at me and I blocked a punch on my left, grabbing his arm and flipping him over.
"I'm sorry."
Those were the last words he ever heard and as I stepped away from his still body, I heard Castiel weakly calling for me. I went to his side and quickly healed him. Helping him over to the other two, I flew us all back to the bunker. All of us weren't physically harmed, but shaken up. Dean took a swig from the beer he had just gotten from the white box, called a "fridge".
"I think you," he paused to point at me, "should always come with us."
I gave him a smile and Sam handed me a beer. I took a tentative sip from the brown bottle and licked my lips. I looked up at the boys, who were awaiting my response.
"It's good," I said before taking another sip.
Dean smiled.
"Welcome to the team."
