Evan POV

"So what happened to your arm?"

I faced the extremely tall person next to me. Okay, not extemely tall, but definitely tall. "I fell."

"I figured. No, I mean how, when, where, whatever."

"Oh." I looked at the plain white cast around my arm and held it like it was some precious piece of glass. "I fell out of a tree. I was um working at Ellison State Park. Where I work. When I was working, I fell out a tree at the park..where I work."

"Hey where do you work again?" He chuckled. I did say that a lot. UGh. He pointed at my arm again, slightly touching it this time. "No one's signed it?"

"No. My mom offered to, but you know. My mom signing my cast?"

"Yeah. My mom would have made me let her sign it. Can I sign yours?"

I smiled. "Totally!" I grabbed the sharpie I had in my pocket in case people wanted to sign it. No one did.

I watched Connor as he signed his name. He wrote it in big letters that took up the entire side of the cast. "Heh thanks."

"Everyone always does it so small. This is a symbolic representation of our friendship." He laughed and ran his hand through his hair.

Jared popped up out of thin air, I swear. It startled me. "Did Connor Murphy just say something about friendship and then laugh? That's weird. Loving the new hair length. It's really school shooter chic."

Connor just went silent and looked at Jared.

"It was a joke, dude."

"No, I know. It was hilarious." Completely deadpan. This is intense.

"Welp, physics isn't gonna learn itself. I gotta go.."

"Hey honey, how was school?"

"Mom? Why are you home so early?"

"Karen's off maternity leave finally, so I don't have to double my hours all the time. I'm so happy! I can finally talk to you and we can eat and chat and watch movie together. I missed you honey." She sat in a chair at the dining table. "So how was your date the other night?"

She works all day, then goes to school in the evening. I know she's trying. She wants to provide for us and make sure I'm healthy and cared for, even if it means being busy 90% of her day, everyday. She really is the best mom in the world.

"Um it didn't go well. She didn't show up."

"Aw, Evan. Are you alright?"

"But her brother was there I guess. He's my age. He sat at my booth and became my friend."

"Oh that's amazing! I'm proud of you already! Is that his name on your cast?"

"Yeah."

Her expression looked like I was a small animal doing something so adorable you literally start tearing up. She's so happy to see me happy. That's all she ever wants. Even though I don't see her very much anymore, I still love her and miss her. Ahh.
