A/n this chapter is Judith telling Clary and Mark about what happened.

'It was a cold December night. You and your brother are winter children born on the 20th December. I was sent out to a poor woman who was going into labour. I delivered you and your brother but your mother died after saying she wished for you to be sent away to England. I didn't know what to do with your brother so I abandoned him on the steps of an orphanage. I then took you to England and watched over you for a year but I couldn't stay I needed to get back to my job so I left you in the capable hands of Janice Giry. I went back to Paris and found the orphanage I left your brother at because after four years I felt guilty that you got the best start and he didn't. So I went there and asked if he had been adopted yet. Surprisingly, he had been taken by other people more specifically gypsies. The last thing I heard was he escaped the gypsies and went into the cellars of the theatre.

I felt sick 'Nurse what was he called?'
She smiled sympathetically 'Erik, Erik Destler. I tried to find him I'm sorry'
I looked her face and all I saw was sympathy. 'Well you didn't try hard enough! I don't want your sympathy. Either of you I just want you to leave me alone.' With that I ran out the room and sprinted straight back to the opera house ignoring Mark who kept calling after me. I just wanted to be alone.
