When would the surprises ever stop!? The music room was HUGE. It had all the latest recording and digital editing equipment! Not only that, there were all kinds of musical instruments in the store adjacent to the music room. All of which were of high quality, I could tell.
A short, plump woman with cropped brown hair whom I assumed to be our music teacher, told us, "Pick any instruments that you are comfortable with and settle down, class." I learnt the flute before so I picked that while Kevin selected the electric guitar and the piano.
We were grouped into groups of four. YAY, Kevin was with me again. We were told to form a band and create a song. The best would have to perform in front of the whole school during the upcoming music festival.
We met with the other two of our band mates. They seemed like best friends but they looked like total opposites. One had a rakish appearance with spiky blond hair and warm brown eyes that sparkled with excitement. He seemed to have a wide, permanent smile plastered across his face which made me like him instantly. The other had jet-black hair and black pupils that made him look mysterious. He didn't seem very approachable yet I felt like getting to know him more. They both were dashing. Was the school a modeling agency in disguise?!
The smiley guy walked up to us and offered his hand. "Hi guys! I'm Kyler Riley Stewart and this guy over here, is Ciel Vincent. He's a li'l quiet so don't mind him," He introduced. Kevin and I took turns to shake his hand and introduce ourselves as well. Ciel just nodded at us. Awkward. It seemed overly formal. Couldn't he just say 'hi'?
Kyler didn't seem to notice the awkward atmosphere and spoke to us bubbly. It seemed that he chose the drums and harp while Ciel had settled on the violin and piano. Now we had to appoint a vocalist. Damned. Nobody seemed keen on being one. It wasn't that I couldn't sing. I could, but it might bust my identity.
Kyler gathered our attention and I felt my hairs stand, as I was afraid of what he was going to say next. He opened his mouth and started in an excited tone "Now, since our instruments can form both a classical and rock band, we need a vocalist. Colt, you're it! Since you only chose flute and we can't use a flute in a rock band. I'm willing to be the backing vocalist. Or Ciel, Kevin, do you guys want to be it?" They both shook their heads. Oh shit. I should've learnt more instruments. "Then Colt, sing a short verse of a song? Don't be nervous, we're just testing your singing ability." Kevin looked at me nervously and I returned the look.
I was having a mental war. My thoughts were contradicting each other. Should I pretend to be tone deaf? Or should I sing properly? If I couldn't even help with the vocals, I would be useless in the group! I didn't want to be the black sheep. If I deceived the group, it would be going against my morals.
'You're already deceiving them about your identity, idiot.'
Yeah, I didn't need an idiot to tell me that. Eventually, I decided on the latter. I didn't want myself to feel like a total sham.
In my lowest voice, I sang Paramore's Pressure.
"I can feel the pressure
It's getting closer now
We're better off without you
I can feel the pressure
It's getting closer now
We're better off without you
Without you"
They all stared at me and I felt my heart speeding up. Did they find out about my identity? Oh no, please not that. I started to panic and my palms started to sweat.
Kyler started clapping and cheering and Kevin joined in too. I felt myself relax. Thank goodness he didn't realise. Ciel just smiled. His smile looked so endearing. He should smile more. Kyler disrupted my thoughts when he smiled and said, "Colt! You're awesome! So the problem's solved. There, we have our vocalist." Oh damned.
We decided to do two performances and for the classical piece, we decided on Swan Lake. It would be a blend of the violin, piano, flute and the harp. I had a good feeling about it. We were going to write our rock song ourselves and we started on it immediately. By the end of the lesson, we were almost done and we just had to meet up after school for the rehearsals. We booked a studio and said our byes before heading for the next lesson.
It was Advanced Mathematics next. It was my most dreaded subject. Numbers were my nemesis. I dragged my feet into the classroom with Kevin by my side. We couldn't sit beside each other during this class as the empty seats were separated. Mister Anderson, our math teacher who seemed to need hair loss treatment, made Kevin sit right at the front of the class, while I was near the back. I walked to my seat and sat down gloomily. I wasn't with Kev.
I was sighing when I saw a piece of paper land on my table. I picked it up and it read 'Hey dude. Look to your right.' I turned to see Shane smiling back at me. I felt my heart skip a beat. We were in the same class! I smiled back at him and I scribbled a note back 'Such a coincidence!' and slid it back to him. He replied and we continued our paper slip conversation.
We were talking about Mister Anderson's balding head and I couldn't help but let a laugh escape my lips. Mister Anderson turned around and pointed in our direction. "Who just laughed?" He yelled. Everyone was looking at one another with accusing eyes. I was about to admit when Shane stood up and said, "Me, sir." Shane just took the rap for me! I felt so touched and guilty at the same time. I didn't want him to be my scapegoat! Tears were brimming in my eyes. I blinked them back and tried to calm myself down. Boys didn't cry over trivial issues. Mister Anderson looked surprised as he looked at Shane then narrowed his eyes at me. I think he knew. "Oh, I'm surprised, Shane. Now your punishment will be to complete a hundred questions in the workbook on trigonometry. Now, sit down and stop distracting people."
I felt bad and apologetic to Shane. I didn't dare to look at him. I was doodling on my notebook when Shane slid another piece of paper to me. 'Hey don't feel bad. Mister Anderson doesn't punish me as harshly as others so I took the blame. If you wanna make it up to me, have lunch with me?(:' I smiled while reading the note. He was so sweet; I could get a tooth decay. I replied, 'Sure! Do you mind eating with my friend Kevin?' He mouthed the word 'Nope' to me. I grinned and continued drawing squiggly lines on my notebook 'til the bell rang.
Shane, Kevin, and I all headed to the cafeteria together and sat down in one of the corner tables. Kyler and Ciel walked into the cafeteria and spotted us. They joined us for lunch and it seemed that they both knew Shane as well. We were all chatting happily and Lewis joined us afterwards. I couldn't believe it. He was Shane's best friend!? Shane was sweet while Lewis was a jerk. I rolled my eyes when Lewis sat opposite me.
"Yo, Colt my friend. Aren't you gonna say 'hi' to me?" He asked cheerfully.
"Hi," I replied without expression. I felt bad the moment it left my mouth. It was kinda rude of me but I didn't feel like being nice to him after he teased me so much. The people sitting around our table went quiet and stared at me for my apparent rudeness. Oops. I turned to Kyler and changed the subject to our music project. Kyler got all excited and we talked about it for most of lunch. The bell sounded when lunch ended and we all had to leave for our lessons. It seemed that Kyler, Kevin, Lewis, Shane and I all had Physical Education afterwards. P.E was going to be troublesome.
We walked into the indoor stadium and from the looks of it, we were going to have judo for lesson. Hit me on the head, please.
