~Shane’s POV~

I shifted in my sleeping bag, trying to make myself comfortable. Despite having worked out my body so much, I didn’t feel tired enough to sleep. With so many thoughts going through my head, I was far from blacking out. It’s been awhile since Colt left the tent. Where would she be heading for in the middle of the night, in the middle of nowhere? It has been five minutes since she left. Five whole minutes! So many things could happen in five minutes! What if she got lost? What if she got injured? What if she got eaten by a bear?! My mind would not let me rest. Those horrifying thoughts bombarded me, I was going crazy! I unzipped my sleeping bag as softly as I could, wore my shoes, and slipped out of the tent.

Now, where would she go?! I went round the perimeter of our camp site. No where to be found. We were situated near the waterfall so I decided to head there next.

I was making my way through the knee-high grass when I thought I heard sounds of grass being crunched under foot that did not belong to me. I turned around but there was nothing there. It was very dark. The tree branches interlocked so closely that very little light filtered through. Even if there was something, I couldn’t see it. “Is there anyone there?” I called out. Silence was my reply. Maybe it was an animal or something. I continued walking and the I didn’t hear the sound again. I guess, my worry for Colt was making me paranoid. When did I become such a sissy?!

After moments of walking, I reached the edge of the forest where it stopped and the waterfall continued. I didn’t know what I was seeing when my brain actually processed what I saw after a minute of freezing. There, was Colt in the lake, in all her glory. Oh. My. God. The water was up to her shoulders so I couldn’t really see anything, but.. Hell! I was a normal guy for lord’s sake! I hurriedly turned over to back-face her. My face was reddening. She didn’t see me, thankfully. I was trying to regulate my breathing when two familiar faces appeared, startling the shit outta me.

Three metres in front of me, stood a curious looking Lewis, with question marks plastered over his face, and a Ciel that looked like he didn’t give a damn about anything, his usual expression, and was dragged out by Lewis. I couldn’t quite fathom Ciel. He used to be really cheerful when I first knew him in grade three when we had gym together, but he started to change, like in grade six or something, and became really reserved. I heard, he and Kyler went a long way back, even before they entered the school, so they’re really close. Well not that long, since we entered at the age of seven, but you get what I mean. I guess that’s why Ciel only talks to him now. Back to the situation, they were both staring at me, and I was, them. Breaking the silence, I started, “Uh… What are you guys doing out here?”

“That’s what we would like to ask you too. And, what are you doing, just standing there?” Lewis countered, suspicion brimming in his eyes.

What was I supposed to say? Because I was worried about Colt getting eaten by a bear so I came out, then I found her, and kind of watched her bathe for like five seconds? Then tell them, ‘Oh, btw, Colt’s a girl’? Definitely not going that way. I decided on a half-truth. Half-truths go best whenever you need to lie. It’s easier to cover up that way. “I was looking for Colt. He disappeared all of a sudden,” I replied as confidently as I could.

“Uh-huh,” Lewis replied, seeming not to believe me. I never considered acting as my future career… “So did you find him?” He continued.

“Nope,” I replied too quickly. I tried not to look behind, where Colt was, but the more I tried, the more I did. I was an idiot. Lewis started to walk closer to me, eyeing what was behind me. I couldn’t get her exposed because of me! I needed to warn her, and get them away. I walked closer to Lewis, trying to block his way to the waterfall.
