That night, Imelda couldn't stop thinking about Héctor. The other twelve dates she'd gone on were nothing like hers with Héctor. She smiled all through dinner, prompting odd glances from Oscar and Felipe, who were used to their big sister being grumpy and bossy. She practically skipped upstairs, where she immediately began trying to guess where Héctor was going to take her the next day.
Imelda tried on multiple occasions to stop thinking about Héctor. What has gotten into you? she asked herself. Whenever she finally thought about something else, her mind would find a way to link it back to Héctor. She convinced herself she needed to sleep, and she did that.
That night, she dreamt about Héctor. When she woke up, she couldn't remember what the dream was about, but she remembered Héctor's face. She realized it was only 7 AM. Thirteen more hours. She started trying to choose what to wear. It was technically an evening event, so she considered wearing an evening gown. Then she realized that if she did that her family would never let her out of the house. Eventually, she settled on a purple skirt that she'd bought for a party. It was 8:30. Eleven and a half more hours.
"It's gonna be a long day, Pepino," she said to her cat, who seemed to mew in agreement.

"Héctor, come on! I want to play in the Plaza!" said Ernesto.
"Ernesto, I'm writing!" said Héctor.
"Write later!"
"This isn't just any song!" Héctor explained.
"Well then what is it?" said Ernesto. Héctor didn't reply. "It's for a girl, isn't it?" asked Ernesto. Héctor nodded. "I can't have you fall for a girl!" said Ernesto. "Soon, you'll be spending all your time with her!" Héctor said nothing. "You're seeing her tonight, aren't you?"
"Maybe," said Héctor.
"Come on, amigo! We need to play!"
"Play without me if you want. You can take my songs."
"I'm not giving you any tips to spend on that girl."
"Hey! No tips, no songs."
"Fine. But I get two thirds."
"Fine," said Ernesto.
"Fine

"Imelda! Can you stop?" asked Oscar. Imelda was anxiously drumming her fingers on the table. She had already gotten dressed and done, undone, and redone her hair as many times as should be legal, and there was still half an hour until she met up with Héctor. She had just finished dessert and Mamá was washing dishes.
"You stop!" said Imelda.
"I'm not doing anything," Oscar replied
"You're talking to me!" said Imelda.
"Imelda! Oscar!" said Mamá. "When is this date you're going on, Imelda?"
"How do you know? I never told you it was a date."
"You have that look."
"What look?"
"The second date look."
"I've never gone on more than one date with the same boy! How do you know my second date look?"
"First, I gave birth to you. Second, everyone has the same look. Now, answer the question."
"Eight."
"Thank goodness! You need to get out of the house, mija. Why don't you do something fun?"
"I tried that, Mamá. I tried singing, but I got too distracted. Then I played with Pepiña, but Pepiña got distracted. I washed all the dishes from lunch, and I even tried embroidery. I read a math textbook!"
"Wow. You must really like this boy."
"I do. He's funny, he's kind, he's talented, he's handsome..." Soon, Imelda found herself telling her Mamá everything about Héctor.
"Ay, dios mio! You don't like this boy, Imelda. You're in love!"
"Mamá!" Imelda exclaimed.
"It's true. Now, it's seven fifty-five. Go meet that boy!"
Imelda ran out of her house. This time, she was outside before Héctor. She smiled smugly. Then someone snuck up from behind her.
"Boo." said a voice. Héctor's voice. Imelda giggled. She saw Héctor with his guitar on his back. "i like your skirt. Purple."
Imelda blushed. "I thought of you. Now, where are we headed tonight?"
"Follow me." said Héctor, running away.
"Hey! Wait!" said Imelda, chasing Héctor. He climbed a ladder that was leaning on a roof.
"Come on!" said Héctor.
"I don't know, Héctor."
Héctor jumped down from the roof, causing Imelda to gasp.
"Here. You climb up first. I'll stay right behind you the entire time." Héctor wrapped his arms around Imelda's waist as she climbed. With Héctor behind her, Imelda felt safe, and she quickly climbed without difficulty.
"Is this where we're going?"
Héctor shook his head. "Next one over." He pointed to a much taller roof next door.
"How do we get there?"
"We jump," said Héctor. He jumped between roofs. Imelda couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief when he landed.
"Your turn!" Héctor called.
Imelda shook her head nervously.
"Venga, corazon!"
"Corazon?" Imelda blushed.
Héctor nodded. "You can do it."
Imelda took a deep breath and leaped. She didn't even realize she'd closed her eyes until she opened them and found herself in Héctor's arms.
