"Ernesto, is Héctor home?" asked Imelda.
"Imelda, I really need to talk to you," said Ernesto, looking at Coco.
"Of course. Coco, mija, why don't you go up to your room for a little while. I'll come to get you soon."
"Alright!" Coco practically skipped away, thinking of Héctor.
"Why don't you sit down?" asked Ernesto.
"Excuse me. I won't be told what to do in my own house. Now, where's Héctor?" asked Imelda sharply.
"Right. Well, Héctor... he had a difficult decision to make between his career or his family. He made a choice that he thought would be better if I shared. He left me a note. Although I lost it on the train here, it said something about abandoning the two of us and Coco and starting his own career independently. I know it's a lot to take in, and I was shocked when I read it. If I knew where Héctor was, I would tell you, but he just disappeared one night and I haven't seen him since. He could be on his way out of Mexico, for all I know," Ernesto explained.
"Alright," said Imelda, not knowing exactly what to say. "You can go now."
Ernesto crept out the door, and Imelda swore she saw him grin. Slowly, she went upstairs to Coco's room and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" said Coco.
"Coco, I need to tell you something," said Imelda.
"Okay!" Coco said cheerfully. "Is Papá coming back?"
"No!" Imelda had planned to keep her cool when telling her daughter, but she lost it. "Papá isn't coming back because he's a good-for-nothing lowlife who somehow convinced us that he loved us. He was lying. Papá chose not to come back. He didn't care about you, or about me, or even about Ernesto! He only cared about music! You know what? I don't want to hear it anymore! From now on, we will not allow music in this house! Understood?"
"Mamá, it's okay," Coco said, confused.
"It's not okay! It won't be okay ever again because of him!" said Imelda, talking to herself more than Coco. She stormed out of Coco's room, slamming the door behind her, and she went back downstairs to the living room. About to sit down and stew about how much she hated Héctor, she noticed a family portrait.
"Ugh!' said Imelda, grabbing the picture and taking it out of the frame, looking at Héctor. "I hate you! You ruined my life, and I never want to see your stupid face ever again!" Angrily, she ripped Héctor's face out of the picture, putting the picture back up and throwing Héctor's face on the floor. "I hope I never see you again! You can die, for all I care!"
