When Imelda and Héctor returned, Héctor told Ernesto it was time for them to leave.
"What?" said Ernesto. "We just got here."
"Imelda has things to do," Héctor said.
"What could you have to do?" said Ernesto, looking at Imelda condescendingly.
Imelda glared at Ernesto. In the blink of her eye, she took her boot off and smacked him hard in the side of the head with it.
"¡Dios Mio! You picked a feisty one, amigo!" Ernesto exclaimed, rubbing the side of his head. Imelda rolled her eyes.
"See you tomorrow, Héctor," she said before turning and going back into her house.
Ernesto and Héctor walked away from Imelda's house together.
"Héctor, are you sure you want to be with her?" asked Ernesto. Héctor smiled and nodded. Imelda smacking Ernesto with the shoe had made Héctor fall more in love with her. Ernesto was a great friend, but very few people were confident enough to put him in his place. Apparently, Imelda was one of the few.

The next day, Imelda had taken it upon herself to provide the surprise. Whether he liked it or not, Héctor was going to meet her family.
Imelda started the day by putting her plan into action. She told her mamá to cook a big meal since Héctor would be joining them at dinner. She had the twins straighten up the house. At six, she waited outside her house for Héctor.
"Ready to go?" said Héctor.
"Actually," Imelda said smugly. "I left something inside. Could I go get it really quickly?"
"Of course. I'll wait here."
"Come inside! I wouldn't want you to have to wait any longer," said Imelda.
"Alright," Héctor said without thinking. Imelda grabbed his arm and tugged him inside before he had a chance to give it a second thought.
"He's here, Mamá!" exclaimed Imelda. Héctor looked at her desperately. Imelda smiled sweetly. That's when Héctor realized that she'd planned this. If it had been any other girl Héctor had ever met, he would've run out the door. But it was Imelda, and Imelda was very different from every other girl Héctor knew.
Instead of Imelda's parents, two skinny boys who looked exactly alike appeared from another room in the house.
"This is Oscar, and this is Felipe," said Imelda. Héctor immediately forgot which twin was which. Then two people who Héctor could only guess were Imelda's parents appeared behind him. One was a woman who looked exactly like an older Imelda, and the other was a short man.
Imelda's parents approached Héctor, and he prayed Imelda hadn't inherited any time of gene relating to hitting people with shoes from her parents. Instead of a smack with a shoe, Héctor received a tight hug from them.
"This is Héctor, Imelda?" said one of the twins.
"Yes, it is. If there's an issue, we can address it later," said Imelda, glaring at her brothers. The two boys started to giggle.
"There's no issue. We thought he would..." started a twin.
"Be a lot uglier!" another finished. This sent everyone into a fit of laughter.
"Come, sit down!" said Imelda's father.
"We made you dinner. Imelda said you liked tamales!" said her mother.
"I do," Héctor said, grinning at Imelda.
Hétor followed Imelda's family to the dining room. Although most of his uneasiness was gone due to the warm welcome he'd received, he still hurriedly sat next to Imelda.
"Tell us about yourself!" said Imelda's father.
"Okay," Héctor began. "I... I'm Héctor. I play the guitar."
"He's great at it!" interjected Imelda, sensing that Héctor didn't love being the center of attention.
"And I assume you've been nothing but kind to our Imelda, correct?" Imelda's father continued.
"Si, señor," Héctor said. Everyone looked to Imelda to confirm.
"Héctor is amazing," she said, looking at him.
The rest of dinner was filled with laughter and pleasant conversation. After dinner, Imelda excused herself and went up to her room. Héctor followed.
"See! I told you they wouldn't hate you!" said Imelda.
Héctor smiled. "I guess you were right. For once."
"For once?" Imelda exclaimed. She playfully threw a pillow at him. He laughed.
Imelda sat down on her bed, and Héctor sat down with her.
"I'm sorry yesterday was so short," said Héctor.
"I would apologize for hitting your best friend with my shoe, but he deserved it."
"I personally think that you're very beautiful when you're upset." Imelda blushed. "Actually, I think you're beautiful no matter what."
"Thank you!" said Imelda.
The pair sat in silence for a while, although it was more of a calm silence than an awkward one.
"Imelda?" Héctor said.
"Héctor?" Imelda said back.
Héctor took a deep breath. "I love you."
"I love you too," said Imelda.
"I bet you usually hit people with a shoe when they say that," said Héctor.
"You know me so well," said Imelda.
"Imelda!" said a voice. The twins threw open the door.
"Good." said one.
"Mamá and Papá told us to make sure you and Héctor weren't doing..."
"Eww!" screamed Imelda. "Get out!" she said, picking up a slipper from the floor. The twins giggled and ran away.
