Héctor followed through on his promise, and Imelda received a letter two days after their date. It said that she could meet Ernesto in three weeks and that he and Ernesto would meet her in the usual meetup spot outside Imelda's house. Over the next three weeks, if Imelda wasn't reading a letter from or writing a letter to Héctor, she was definitely either talking about him or thinking about him.

Her entire family soon became aware of her relationship with Héctor due to the constant letter writing, and they were anxious to meet him. Imelda replied that she'd try to find a time after she met Ernesto.

To Imelda, the three weeks without seeing Héctor felt like three years, and the day she was going to meet Ernesto couldn't have come fast enough. Finally, it arrived. She waited outside for a while, and Héctor was an hour late. This surprised Imelda since Héctor had gotten there on time for their past two dates.

Still, she was too excited to leave, so she waited until Héctor finally arrived. He had Ernesto with him, who had a smug grin on his face. After smiling at Héctor, Imelda looked at Ernesto with a completely straight face. The shocked look he gave back implied he had expected Imelda to be overjoyed by his presence.

"You must be Imelda," said Ernesto in a voice Imelda could tell was an attempt at being charming.

"Ernesto," Imelda said, clearly letting him know that she didn't find him amusing at all.

"I've heard so much about you from mi amigo Héctor. Of course, it was all good things," Ernesto said.

"And I've heard about you as well," said Imelda. "Héctor does mention you a lot."

"Well, I now see everything Héctor said about you is true," said Ernesto, staring at Imelda in a way that was much more uncomfortable than the way Héctor did it. It made her want to run back into her house, but she replied to Ernesto.

"I could say the same about you."

It was true. Ernesto's overconfidence was already showing within the first few minutes Imelda had known him.

"Héctor, can I speak to you?" said Imelda. "Alone," she added with a glance Ernesto's way.

"Of course," said Héctor. "Ernesto, stay right here."

Héctor and Imelda walked a little bit down the road before stopping. "I don't like this man," said Imelda. "I know he's your best friend, but he seems strange."

"I was just thinking it was time for us to get going," said Héctor.

"You just got here!" exclaimed Imelda. "I haven't seen you in three weeks."

"I know. I've missed you. Maybe we can see each other tomorrow?" Héctor suggested.

"No Ernesto?" asked Imelda.

Héctor smiled. "Just the two of us."
