The twelfth came quickly, and Héctor went out to buy a surprise for Coco and Imelda. Although Héctor had taken down the flyers, he had forgotten to tell Ernesto he wouldn't be coming to the performance. Naturally, Ernesto showed up at his house.
Imelda answered the door since she and Coco were the only ones home.
"Is Héctor here?" Ernesto asked.
"No. Why do you ask?" asked Imelda.
"He didn't show up today, and I wanted to be sure everything was alright."
"Everything is quite alright. It's Coco's birthday, and Héctor wanted to be with her," Imelda said coldly. Although Ernesto had apologized to Héctor, he'd never apologized to her, and Imelda wasn't one to let things go easily, so things were quite awkward.
Ernesto narrowed his eyes. "He wanted to, or you wanted him to?"
"He wanted to! It's his daughter's birthday!"
"You had to ask him about it, though. He only listens to you because he's scared of you," Ernesto said.
"How would you know that?" Imelda asked.
"He's my best friend! I know everything he thinks about you. I know you two have your daughter now and life seems perfect, but he doesn't always tell me nice things."
Imelda paused. She didn't want to admit it, but something in Ernesto's tone made her believe him. What if Héctor was lying all those times he talked about how much he loved her? Imelda realized she was about to start crying, and she slammed the door in Ernesto's face before he could see it happen.
"Mamá?" said Coco upon seeing her mother upset. Coco didn't have the words to ask what was wrong, so instead, she motioned for Imelda to pick her up. When she did, Coco gave her mother a tight hug. This made Imelda feel a bit better, and she spent the next hour with Coco.
When Héctor got back, he was carrying a large box. He put the box down on the table, and then was shocked by Imelda running towards him and hugging him. It was evident that she'd been recently crying.
"Héctor, I'm really sorry that I hold you back from achieving your dreams and that I'm kind of mean to you sometimes and I understand that you want to be a musician and if that means not being with me all the time I'm totally alright with that and I'll always love and support you no matter what and I'm sorry that I don't always tell you that," Imelda said, talking a mile a minute.
"What are you talking about? You don't hold me back from achieving my dreams. Meeting someone like you was one of my dreams!" said Héctor.
"I knew you were going to say something like that, and that makes it a lot worse because now I know you're only saying that because you're scared that I'll get really upset if you don't," said Imelda.
"What has gotten into you? I was only gone for an hour and a half!" said Héctor.
"Well, while you were gone, Ernesto came looking for you and I told him you weren't here and he told me that you tell him everything about me and it's not always good things, which I understand, because I definitely haven't been as nice or as supportive as I should be"
"What? Imelda, I've never said anything bad about you to Ernesto or to anyone! And you've been amazing! I literally couldn't wish for anyone better than you. I have no idea why Ernesto said that, but he lied about it,"
No matter how much Imelda had believed Ernesto, she believed Héctor even more.
"Now sit down. I'll go get Coco. I bought a cake."
