After their fight, Héctor and Imelda returned to normal. They began seeing each other almost daily. It had been two weeks since the fight when a Héctor realized that Imelda's birthday was in two weeks. He spent a week pondering what to get her and what to do.
Everything Héctor came up with didn't seem like enough. It got to the point where he asked Ernesto for suggestions. Ernesto was no help. Héctor should've known. Birthdays weren't Ernesto's forté. For Héctor's last birthday, Ernesto had given Héctor a photo of himself.
Finally, Héctor had an idea. At first, he questioned the idea. When he finally decided what he wanted to do, he was only nervous for a day or two before he got excited. To ensure his plan was a secret, he told nobody, not even Ernesto.
A week before Imelda's birthday, he sat down and wrote two letters.
The first letter received almost an immediate response. He and Imelda agreed to meet in the park where they'd had their first kiss. The wait on the second letter felt like torture to poor Héctor. He finally received a reply just two days before Imelda's birthday.
"Ernesto!" said Héctor the day before Imelda's birthday. "I can't play with you tomorrow."
"You're going to be with Imelda, aren't you?" said Ernesto.
"It's her birthday. I have something really special planned."
"If you must. But promise that you'll be free tomorrow."
"If everything goes as planned, I may not be, amigo," Héctor said.
*************************
Despite Imelda's parents' attempts to stop them, the twins woke Imelda up early the next day.
"Happy birthday!" they screamed in unison.
Instead of hitting them with her shoe like she would've done every other day, Imelda hugged the twins and thanked them.
"Mamá made huevos rancheros!" said Oscar excitedly. Imelda followed the twins downstairs for breakfast.
"Héctor wrote us a lovely letter and told us you were going to the park this afternoon," said Imelda's mother.
"Mamá!" said Felipe. That's when Imelda realized something was up. It became more and more evident throughout the morning. Every time Imelda left a room, she would come back to her family whispering.
Imelda tried to get information from the twins. "Alright, you two. What is going on?" she asked them.
"Nothing!" said Oscar.
"Nothing at all!" Felipe confirmed. Still, they made knowing eye contact.
When she was leaving to meet Héctor that afternoon, she was almost relieved to get out of her house and away from the whispering. They're probably planning something. When I get back, there's probably going to be some type of party. Imelda thought.
When she got to the park, Héctor was already there. He wished her a happy birthday and then they walked around for a while.
"I haven't been here in forever," said Imelda.
"Neither have I. Hey, let's stop for a second," said Héctor once they reached a certain spot.
"Are you alright?" asked Imelda.
"Of course. I just have a question," Héctor prepared himself. "Imelda, from the moment I met you, I knew I was in love with you. I knew I wanted to be together forever. Will you marry me?"
Imelda was silent for a moment. Héctor's heart dropped. Then she threw her arms around him and squeezed him tightly. "Of course!" said Imelda.
They hugged for a while before Héctor said "Do you know where we are?"
"Of course I do! I thought it was a coincidence that you wanted to stop here."
"I knew exactly what I was doing," Héctor said. He leaned in, planting a kiss on Imelda's lips. Imelda kissed back. When they pulled away, Héctor immediately apologized.
"I didn't get you anything for your birthday. I'm sorry."
"Nothing to apologize for! Knowing I'll get to spend the rest of my life with you is the only thing that I need," Imelda said.
Héctor was surprised. Usually, he was the one who offered the mushy sentiments. He was happy to have the role off his shoulders for a moment. Imelda and Héctor stayed at the park until sunset, when Imelda said she had to get home for dinner.
"You're welcome to join us, Héctor. You're going to be a part of our family!"
Héctor thought for a moment of Ernesto, but he pushed Ernesto out of his mind and followed Imelda home. Ernesto can wait.
