Everyone that Héctor and Imelda knew was extremely excited about the baby, but nobody was more excited than the twins. Sometimes, it felt as if they were more excited than Imelda and Héctor were.
They visited Héctor and Imelda every day. Their parents jokingly asked if they would like to go live with them instead, and Oscar and Felipe showed up in front of their very surprised sister with suitcases.
Because Héctor had to write music for Ernesto to earn money for himself as well as Imelda and the baby, Imelda was alone in terms of getting everything prepared. This turned out to involve a lot of time and a lot of trips to the store. It was on one of those trips to the store that the twins decided to attempt to surprise Imelda.
They waited until she left for the store and snuck into the house through the side door, which was always unlocked. They went to the room that was going to be the baby's room and found it not baby-ready at all, with random pieces of wood all over the floor.
"Imelda left a room like this?" said Felipe, who remembered his sister as someone who kept everything perfect.
"She's been busy. We're going to try to change that," said Oscar, digging through a pile of badly drawn instruction manuals. "I can't understand these at all. What kind of manuals are they?"
"I'm pretty sure Ernesto made them. He insists he knows how to build things, although he never offered to help Imelda with anything. I eavesdropped on a conversation she was having with Héctor about it." said Felipe.
"Well, Ernesto is obviously wrong. We can't use these! We'll just have to build stuff on our own. What does a baby need?" asked Oscar.
"Well, when we were babies, I know we had a rocking chair. Why don't we try to do that?" asked Felipe.
"Perfect!" exclaimed Oscar, gathering nails off of the floor. "There's only three nails."
"How about glue?" Felipe asked.
"Glue will work. Make sure it's strong," said Oscar. Felipe found a bottle of glue that looked strong, and Oscar insisted on taking charge of the project, leaving Felipe holding the glue bottle, bored. He decided to test the strength of the glue on his shoes.
Felipe only intended to glue his shoes together. He put glue on both of them. As he set down the glue bottle, he accidentally stepped on the floor. Before he realized what he'd done, his shoe was glued to the floor.
He instantly panicked. His immediate reaction was to stand up, thinking it would give him a better angle. Only after he'd stood up did he realize he'd glued both shoes to the floor.
"Oscar!" screamed Felipe. Oscar immediately realized the severity of the situation and came up with a plan that was, in his mind, genius.
He decided to try to cut the shoes off with a knife. Before he could leave the room to get the knife, he heard voices. Imelda and Héctor! They must've met up somewhere. Oscar grabbed his twin's hand after Felipe removed his feet from the shoes and pulled him into a closet.
Soon, Imelda entered the room. The twins held their breath and hoped she wouldn't notice the shoes. However, Imelda had left the room messy on purpose. She had laid out all the wood pieces before realizing she would need two people, one to hold the wood and one to put in the nails, which she had gone to the store for. When she scanned the room, she instantly noticed the shoes.
She attempted to pick up the shoes and noticed they were glued to the floor.
"I can't do this," whispered Felipe.
"No!" whispered Oscar, knowing what his brother was up to. "If you open that closet door, I'll..."
Felipe opened the door, jumping out and pulling Oscar with him.
Imelda, not expecting anyone else to be home, screamed a word that the twins weren't even supposed to know. Since Héctor was still very protective of Imelda, he raced to the baby's room.
"Imelda, mi amor, what's wrong?" Héctor said, instinctively wrapping his arms around his wife protectively. Then he noticed the twins. "What are they doing here? I thought they wouldn't be here until dinner."
"I thought so too," said Imelda, glaring at her brother. "And if they weren't my brothers, I'd be hitting them with a shoe right now. The two idiots jumped out of the closet. Also, there's a pair of shoes glued to the floor, which is definitely their doing, since Felipe isn't wearing shoes," said Imelda to Héctor. "Explain," she said to her brothers.
Oscar volunteered himself to explain. He told Imelda and Héctor the entire story.
"Let me get this straight. Felipe got bored, and he decided to glue his shoes to the floor? And you never made it clear whose idea it was to jump out of the closet," said Imelda.
"That was Felipe's idea," said Oscar.
"You decided to go into the closet!" interjected Felipe.
"To be honest, I don't care. I appreciate you trying to help, but in the future, if we need help, we can ask you. Héctor and I have it under control. And never do the jumping out of the closet thing again."
"That was all Felipe's idea," said Oscar.
"Mamá's going to get so mad if she finds out about the shoes," said Felipe to his brother.
"She probably won't let us visit here again!" said Oscar.
"I'll get the shoes off the floor, and I won't tell Mamá," said Imelda.
"Or Papá!" added Felipe.
"Or Papá," continued Imelda, "if you guys promise not to repeat what I said when you jumped out of the closet. I can't have Mamá and Papá knowing you learned that from me."
"Deal." said both twins.
