"Thank you so much!" the woman cried, clenching my hand in hers, "You'll be blessed for this! Truly!"
I dug up a smile from somewhere deep inside to give her. "You're very welcome."
"Well, that was certainly unexpected," the doctor gawked, pushing his glasses back onto their place on the brigde of his nose, "Let's go ahead and get you scheduled for the surgery then. The sooner the better."
After bowing an amount of times, the woman and the others tailed him out of the room to make preparations.
Minjee's mother was sleeping, so I placed her flowers on the foot of her bed and left, eager to tell Minjee about my good deed. She would be ecstatic. "Maybe she'll finally see me as a living creature instead of a machine," the hope inside of me said, suddenly glittering with excitement.
When I walked through the door, I immediately went to her room to inform her. She was still sprawled out in bed recovering, but she was much better than before. "Minjee! I have great news."
She put the t.v. on mute for the first time all day and turned with every bit of attention she had, "Finally! Everything else seems to be falling apart. What is it?"
"I made a donation: just as you suggested. Someone was in need, so I did what was human and gave her what I had."
"That is great news! What did she say?"
"She thanked me profusely, and frankly had quite a strong grip on my hand. She bowed many times as well."
"Woah, she must've really needed the money."
As I told her about my newest accomplishment as an android, the old emotions that had suddenly disappeared, reappeared just as quickly, "Surely. She was even crying in jubilation."
"Jeez! How much did you give her?" Minjee laughed, "she must've been really desperate for the handout."
"It was a very large sum of money," I stated proudly, "$20,000 in total."
She suddenly didn't seem happy anymore. Not in the slightest. "$20,000?!" She shot up and threw her legs over the side of the bed, "Where the hell did you get $20,000?!"
I was confused, "I used your savings account like I always do when making a purchase or a transaction."
"You WHAT?!"
I grew much more hesitant than before. I suddenly felt like a criminal. "Your savings account," I repeated, "They were the guardians of a patient in need of surgery but they couldn't afford it. I calculated their chances of survival to determine who to give it to. The other patient's chances were higher, so naturally the money would be put to better use if I gave it to her because she's less-likely to pass away post-surgery. They needed $20,000, and I had access to your account, so I donated it to them as you said I should do."
She rocketed off of the bed, her face flaming red and eyes shooting daggers, "That was the money for my Mother's surgery!! Why the hell would you give that away?!"
The situation sank in and my anger began seeping through my words, "What do you mean? You wanted me to be human like you. I just did what you said was right."
"J-Hope!!!"
"What? What did I do wrong?"
"Everything!!"
I wasn't aware that a single word could sting so badly until she said that. And it wasn't remotely true. "Everything? What are you talking about? I did every single thing I was told to do since day 1, but now that I do the one thing that you claim is human, then it's not okay anymore?"
