The next thing I heard was gunshots, bullets hitting plastic, and the sickening slap of bodies hitting the ground. I grabbed Minjee, clutched her to my chest, and swung her around so that I was facing the gunfire. I squeezed my eyes closed as tightly as I could and prayed to anyone listening that she'd be alright.
"FIRE!"
A second round sounded, more bodies crumbled to the pavement. I was turned the opposite direction, but I could still see their feet marching towards our tormentors, fully knowing the consequences.
The next thing I knew, the sounds went silent. I noticed that I hadn't been shot. I didn't care. Gripping Minjee's shoulders, I pulled her away from me and searched her all over, "Are you okay?! Did you get hit?!"
"No, I didn't get--"
I lifted her chin with my finger, then scanned her face, her shoulders, her arms, her stomach, her legs, then travelled back to her face where I held her cheeks in my hands and stared into her eyes, "Are you okay?!" She sighed, "Yes, I--"
I didn't wait for an answer. "Markus! Send a medic! Now!" I yelled over my shoulder.
"I'm fine, J-Hope! I'm fine!" I finally heard her say. I turned back to her, panting, "Are you sure?"
"Yes! I'm positive. Just calm down a little." She took my hands from off of her shoulders and gently held them in hers, "I'm fine."
I heaved the weight off my shoulders, but I was still shaking in the sudden fear. "Minjee," I swallowed, "You've gotta get out of here. It's-- You can't--" I squenched my eyes shut and dropped my head, trying to shut out the panic, "you can't be here."
I felt soft palms on each side of my face, and I opened my eyes as she lifted my gaze into hers, "I promise you I won't get hurt. Not even a scratch. But please let me do this. Let me correct my mistake and erase what I said to you a while ago. This is the only way I can forgive myself."
I shook my head feverishly, "No, I can't do that. I'd never let you put yourself in danger at my expense."
"Well, it's a little too late for that now, isn't it?" she gave me a soft smile with a hint of sorrow behind it. "Minjee..." I begged.
She pulled my head down and planted a tender kiss on my forehead, "Jung Hoseok... We'll get through this. Together."
I scanned her face for certainty, and without a doubt, it was there. I forced myself to give a faint nod, shoving down the nerves climbing up every inch of my body, and turned to face the mass of androids in the street.
A few more of what little was left of our people were downed. I swallowed hard. From behind me, Minjee's fingers slipped into mine, and she took a step forward to be stand my side. Even as a human, she stood as proudly as the deviants did. I would've been proud too if I wasn't fearing for our lives.
Markus, still standing with the few that were left, lowered himself to the ground and sat with his legs crossed in front of him. All androids behind him followed suit in complete synchronization.
I hadn't moved, but Minjee had already taken a seat with the rest of the deviants. And right there beside her, I sat as well.
From the front, Markus' voice rang out, "Are you gonna shoot unarmed protesters?"
I crossed my fingers that they wouldn't.
The officers shared hesitant glances and lowered their guard as they contemplated what to do. I could feel everyone's movement slowing. Calculating.
Even the helicopter blades in their steady rythym above our heads began to waver. I turned and saw all the reporters with curious cameras flashing. Everyone was waiting for the next move, because absolutely no one knew what to expect. The silence seemed to lower the temperature in the air.
