jin, after giving the laden table a final wipe, grabbed his phone from the counter and made his way back towards his room. it was the afternoon before his date with namjoon, and although he couldn't take his mind off it, he had something else to focus on right now.

jimin, taehyung and jeongguk were expected to come home in approximately fifteen minutes, and jin had prepared everything - he'd cleaned jimin's room (to the best of his ability), made the video games range in alphabetical order so they could play more rather than search for them, found the third controller, and the fourth in case that one didn't work. he'd fetched blankets and cushions from the cupboard that needed a ladder to access, he'd bought the film that jimin had wanted for the past week, despite having already used up his pay cheque for this month on this night.

he'd started the base for the meal that could easily be thrown together for around 8pm, but for when the hungry boys came home after school he'd bought tons of snacks, sweets, crisps, a few rare pieces of fruit but many fruit flavoured drinks, he'd fried meat, every type of snack he could think of was there on the table. jin had assured himself that it was just this one time that he would go so full out, because he needed to impress jeongguk, but he knew deep-down that it wasn't true.

it wasn't that he was being excessive... he just felt for jimin. he knew how he wanted a house to be if a friend was coming over.

he remembered when he'd invited friends over and they'd left in the first fifteen minutes to go to someone else's.

he remembered when the first proper dinner he'd eaten in weeks was one from his classmate's house during a project.

he remembered his only friend in high school asking to come over and him frantically pleading for them to go to theirs, rather than come back to a dingy hole that he was too ashamed to call home.

he remembered trying to arrange play-dates for jimin so that he could work a team-homework, he remembered sometimes having to bring him along so that he wouldn't fear coming home to a bloody, beaten brother.

he remembered begging his teachers to not do projects, using the excuse that he was too shy, and even though it never worked, he could and would never tell them the truth of his situation at home.

it wasn't just embarrassing; it was horrifying, humiliating, and he never wanted jimin to experience that, ever.

he remembered the state of their drunken parents' house when they'd left - it was jin's eighteenth birthday, and he could finally escape, his clammy palm gripping jimin's little baby fingers, the seven year old boy half-awake, drowsily being pulled out the house and towards a night of fear and uncertainty.

he remembered jimin's cries deep into the night, he remembered carrying him up eight flights of stairs to a shitty flat and then coming back down for their meagre luggage.

he remembered his struggles and his pains, and he shuddered, never wanting to think about it again.

their bags had been packed a month prior to the day, the plans made maybe two months before that, jin finding a steady job that ensured he could pay off the rent and the food, electricity and water bills. he'd taken a wad of cash from his parents, a heavy sum that he didn't plan to pay back, but instead he considered it the money that paid back the childhood he never had. although, it was nowhere near the sum he felt he deserved.

he shook the thoughts away after he realised that instead of going on his phone, he'd just paused outside the door of his room and lost track of time and his thoughts, jumping back to life when the doorbell rang. smiling, he decided texting namjoon could wait, and he hurriedly answered the door.

"jiminie! taehyung! and you must be jeongguk, nice to meet you. i'm seokjin, jimin's brother, and obviously you must have heard loads about me-" he chuckled, shaking jeongguk's hands and pulling both jimin and taehyung in for a 'bro-hug', "-but anyway, welcome in."

upon arriving at the full table, a chorus of 'thank you's erupted from the growing boys. jimin grinned when he saw the treats; he would usually give jin a hug, but today he just squeezed his hyung's arm, clearly not wanting to be embarrassed in front of his friend and crush. jin understood, and he winked at him, when neither of the other boys were looking, enjoying the burning of his brother's face.

he decided that he would stay there for a few more minutes, then let them get to it. "so taehyungie, how is art going? it feels like you haven't come in ages!" jin's gift from god might as well have been small talk, because clearly he could keep at it for ages. "jimin tells me that you're acing the van gogh style right now, is that right?"

the exchange went on - taehyung was just like a brother to jin, and their gifts of the gab didn't make it strange that they were acting as so, but then jin moved onto to jeongguk. "and what about you, jeongguk? what subjects do you take?"

jeongguk swallowed, his cheeks full of food, and took a sip of banana milk before speaking. "i take the exact same subjects as jimin, seokjin hyung," he said in a small voice, and jin bit his tongue to stop himself from cooing.

"ah, jeonggukie, you don't have to call me seokjin hyung! call me whatever," he encouraged, "but that's interesting! what do you prefer, singing or dance?"

after a moment in thought, jeongguk replied that singing was his favourite subject at the moment, and after a few more minutes of conversing to get to know the new friend, jin left them to it.

he made his way to his room, thinking again about his past, and thanking the heavens for his job despite his poor qualifications, thanking the stars for the ability to be able to afford this new place, and everything that they ever needed.

he grabbed his phone from his back pocket and proceeded to text namjoon. they'd exchanged phone numbers now, so they could call and text each other rather than just dm, and they'd also exchanged snapchats. jin had claimed that it was for the purpose of upping his snapscore, but they both knew it was just so that he could blow up namjoon's phone with spam every second of the day.

he pressed on the squarish yellow icon and snapped a blurry picture of himself, captioning it:
'jimin's friends have arrived and jeongguk is sooo sweeeett! i feel like tonight is about to get more hectic but that's okay, i'm surviving 😎'
before hitting send. the picture was off to namjoon in the blink of an eye.

he moved onto check all his notifications, a lot of them from namjoon - he happened to be having about three different conversations on the three different apps he had him on. sweetly replying to all his messages, jin flopped onto his bed, a sudden sense of boredom washing over his weary legs as he unexpectedly had nothing to do.

the laughter and chatter floating in from the room next door only made matters worse, which killed him to admit, but he had an unanticipated feeling of longing fill his heart as stabs of jealousy reminded him that he was giving jimin everything they both should've had anyway. when eventually it wouldn't go away, he decided to spam namjoon some more.

it took namjoon two minutes to finally check his phone, and when he did, jin received this:
'hyung, if you're that bored, can i come over?'
then:
'feel free to say no lol it was just a suggestion lol you might be busy haha'

chuckling, jin typed a cute quick reply, then rushed off to tell the other boys that he, too, was having someone over.

now, time to prepare for his own guest.
