the next day came and went, and repeat. as useless as he'd felt throughout jimin's struggle with his friends, jin watched his little brother blossom through it, until eventually his smiley, cute chipmunk was back.
"hyung!" jimin had yelled a couple of weeks after the incident, "guess what!"
"yeah," seokjin had hummed in response, "what?"
"jeongguk asked me to be his boyfriend!"
jin's footsteps thundered down the hall, coming to a stop at jimin pulling off his shoes. "what! what the fuck! jiminie! that's so cute!"
jimin was practically beaming; there were little rays of sunshine twinkling in his crescent eyes. "i know, hyung," he replied, "i'm so happy. i never thought anything like this would ever happen, but look where i am now."
seokjin didn't hesitate to suffocate his brother in a hug. "i love you so much, min," he murmured as he willed the tears building behind his eyes to evaporate, "you're so grown already."
whining, jimin hugged him back before wriggling away. "stop it! i'm not five anymore, i have a boyfriend!" but jin knew just from his smile that he loved him too.
despite jimin's sudden burst of happiness, seokjin knew that his brother was still struggling with his newly nonexistent relationship with taehyung. his ex-bestfriend of six years was no longer speaking to him, and had completely cut both him and jeongguk off - their groupchat had died, and apart from in classes where they had to sit next to each other, they hadn't uttered a single word since the day of the cafe. it was a major change for jimin, namjoon had said to jin when his boyfriend needed comforting, because taehyung had been jimin's crutch throughout his school life, and suddenly he was wobbling away by himself. it was a good analogy, jin had to admit, but even he was missing tae and his goofy smile - tae was the boy he had watch care for his brother without reason, when he himself couldn't.
it was important to jimin that everyone knew that he didn't blame taehyung for distancing himself, as difficult as it was for him to cope with. it was a weird situation and honestly, tae would be the third wheel right now, despite being the one to kindle jimin and jeongguk's initial friendship. but he hung out with the art kids now, and that was fine, so long as he was happy - which they had no way of knowing, either.
it was a monday evening, and jin was cooking for namjoon, who practically lived at their place now. because jin was still hesitant about letting jimin go out (after last time's affair), it was easier for namjoon to come to jin, where they could chill together while in close proximity to jimin.
the moment he seokjin heard a key in the lock, he raced to the door, opening it before namjoon could even turn the key. namjoon looked up, his signature eye-smile creeping onto his face, and pulled the key out of the lock. "hey, baby," he murmured, pulling jin in for a hug.
"joon! you're so early, dinner's not ready yet. but i'm glad you're early - my favourite song is on the radio."
hurrying back to the kitchen, jin turned up the volume and began to awkwardly dance around the small space, frying pan in one hand, spatula in the other. "woo, this is my jam!" he cried, swaying his hips embarrassingly out of time. "dance with me, namu!"
shaking his head and breathing out a chuckle, namjoon's fingers gripped jin's waist as they danced foolishly around the kitchen, treading on each other's toes and laughing all the while. "guess what, jeongguk asked jimin to be his boyfriend today." jin whispered, a contagious smile spreading across his face.
"yeah?" namjoon replied "so they're finally dating?"
"i know. i had to pretend i was surprised - i'm honestly just confused why it took them so long. we weren't like that, were we? we were efficient."
it had been about four months that namjoon and jin had been dating, and jimin considered his brother's boyfriend basically his brother in law. oftentimes there were things that jimin couldn't dare to tell jin, and it was good for him to be able to tell namjoon, someone that could advise him without getting too upset. and namjoon relied on jimin just as much - whenever jin had a bad day, he knew the situation and thus the response before even stepping foot into the apartment.
"stop being sappy! i'm hungry," jimin's voiced whined from the kitchen door, "you two can be stupid later, when i'm asleep." to which the couple, humiliated, began to plate up. they hadn't actually had sex yet, they were waiting until they were completely comfortable, but it was still embarrassing to hear that from your little brother.
"shut up, jimin, if you want to eat tonight."
************
at about 10pm, when jimin was shut away in his room again (presumably glued to his phone), namjoon and seokjin spread themselves out on the couch. with a protective arm around his boyfriend, seokjin was holding him to his chest as they watched the best film in existence: 'aladdin (2019)'. they were just getting to the second (and incredibly emotional) performance of 'speechless', when jin noticed namjoon sniveling away in his lap.
"joon!" he cried, wrapping his arms around him, "what's wrong?"
"i'm going to show you my face."
the words stunned seokjin, his grip on namjoon momentarily loosening as he composed himself. "namjoonie?" he murmured softly, "are you sure? who so suddenly?"
he felt him tense slightly under his touch. "we've been dating for four months already, jinnie," he mumbled, "you deserve to know how i look. and besides, i think i'm finally ready. i want you to see me. i'm just crying because- well, because i'm scared."
seokjin's heart shattered at that. "baby," he cooed, "i don't care about how you look. i truly could not care less. you with or without your mask would not change how much i love you - hell, you could look like an alien and i wouldn't give a fuck, okay? but are you sure you're ready? and not pressuring yourself because you're worried about me?"
namjoon nodded firmly - he wasn't really ready, but then again, he never would be. and now was as good a time as any. "but keep the lights off, okay?" he said in a small voice as he gathered up every ounce of courage in his body.
sitting up, he wiped his eyes and looked deeply into seokjin's, feeling more and more at one with him as he melted into his boyfriend's calming, encouraging expression.
his fingers came up to probe at the elastic of the mask, and squeezing his eyes shut-
he yanked the mask off, and opened his eyes.
