Hiccup's POV
My father and I stayed with the dragons. It was way past noon, the sun began to set and we had our fun with the dragons. It was a great 'father-son' day. It's been a while since we had such a great day. He probably can't remember. We sat on the grass, enjoying the last few streaks of sunlight for today. “Hiccup!”, I familiar female voice exclaimed behind us. Merida. We turned around and were greeted by a smile, wider than the horizon and brighter than the sun. She was carrying a heavy basket with a fabric piece over it, and as the dragons noticed her, they sprinted to her, curious about the content in it. Her smile disappeared by a frightened face, as she saw the dragons approaching with a furious speed. She put the basked on the ground and held her hands up to stop the dragons, yelling: “No no no no no!” They brake right in front of her and she sighed relieved. “Don't ye dare to run me over!”, she told them and both of the dragons looked at the ground. I saw Merida smiling and she walked between the two dragons to hug them. “Don't worry. The basket is all yours.”, she said, before pulling away and taking the fabric off the basket, just to reveal a heap of fish inside of it. While the dragons pounced on the basket to eat, Merida strolled over to us and sat down next to me, placing a quick, soft kiss on my lips. “So... am I allowed to go back now?”, I asked and she lay her head on my shoulder and rolled her eyes. “Well... I actually thought we could stay a bit and enjoy the sunset together, but if you really want to-”, she said, stressing the last words and I cut her off by taking some of her hair and pulling it over her face. “Yeah, yeah I got it, sorry.”, I snickered and I heard her laughing besides me while she ran her hand through her hair to put it out of her face again. I lay an arm around her waist and pulled her a bit closer and as I peeked to her face, her dreamy eyes were focused on the horizon, which was slowly devouring the sun. “I'm glad to see that you found someone who's making you happy, Hiccup.”, my father uttered, smiling at us both and Merida blushed a bit. “Me too.”, I said, softly squeezing Merida's waist. She took a deep breath and besides of that, the only sound, not made by nature, were the dragons playing with the basked of fish. The wind roamed through our hair. It was the perfect time to ride our dragons. The wind is right, the sun is still there, the moment is magical. “So perfect the moment may be...”, Merida whispered, standing up and stretching, “we have to go now.” I frowned at her. “Why?”, I asked, still sitting on the grass. She gave me a wide and excited smile, shaking her head, letting her mouth bring out words that are cheeky and charming with her voice: “It's a surprise.” I rose an eyebrow. What could it be? “You said you wanted to enjoy the sunset?”, I asked cheeky and crossed my arms but she rolled her eyes and smiled. “Yes, I know... but the sun will be gone when we reach Berk and we would be in time.”, she complained, reaching for my hand and pulling me on my feet. She's actually pretty strong but I'm not that heavy anyways. To her surprise I didn't let go of her hand, instead I pulled her closer, suggesting: “Or, we could just use the dragons.” “No, we could not.”, she said immediately after I spoke the suggestion. “Hiccup... they are still scared. You don't know why the dragons went crazy, and so do they. Don't make their life harder than it already is.”, my father said and now I couldn't insist on it. We left the dragons alone, with their fish and basket, and made our way back to Berk. Merida was right. Right before we passed the gates, the sun went down. “Wait!”, she whispered and took the piece of cloth, that covered the fish in the basket, in her hands. “I forgot to blindfold you.” The scent of fish was plainly smellable and the idea to put that over my eyes for more than two seconds send me shivers down my spine. “But... it... it reeks of fish and I don't like this.”, I protested and Merida put it away again, uttering a confused 'fine' and let us walk past the gate. No one was around. Was this the surprise? Merida was nervously looking for something and the moment when her eyes saw a candle she sighed relieved. She muttered something to herself, before turning towards me, with a big smile. “Alright! Ye will follow the candles. Stoick and I will take a different way.” My father frowned at her, asking: “Where do we go?” “I can't tell ye now. I'll tell ye on the way.”, she replied and smiled at me again. “Hurry! The surprise is waiting on the other end.” I smiled at her and kissed her cheek before following the candle. It was a yellow, little, lumpy burning candle in a glass, sitting lonely on the roadside. A few meters away was another one, but less lumpy than the first one. My eyes were focused on the path in front of me, looking for the candles to follow. Over time, the number of candles increased. From one, to two, then three and so on. She made this for me? A smile formed on my lips and as I turned around the corner, both sides of the gravel road where covered in candles, forming lines that guided my way. My eyes were still fixed on the ground while I walked along the path, until I noticed that it's betting brighter in front of me. I frowned and slowly lifted my head to see, what the cause of the light would be and the scene left me speechless. Glasses... glasses, filled with candles, everywhere on the ground, and between a few glasses... my friends, holding glasses in theirs hands. “Fishlegs...”, I muttered while looking at him. He threw me a smile and I let my eyes wander around. “Ruffnut... Tuffnut.” They smiled at me too. “Snotlout...” Even he gave me a smile. I thought he was still angry. For some odd reason, he had no glass. He held a bare, burning candle. “Astrid.” Her smile told me what was up. 'We will miss you'. I could read it out of her eyes. The other townspeople stood behind all this, but everyone was there. Everyone. I felt tears forming in my eyes and I held them back as much as I could. “Hiccup...”, Astrid started and I stopped looking around to see who's there and turned my face to her. “You don't have to worry about leaving again. This time... this time, we know that you are going to be alright. The last years.. we've been afraid that... that...”, tears started to form in her eyes as well and her voice started to break but she continued talking, bringing everyone to their tears, “that you will never come back. Even though you won't come back... again... we know that you are OK and we don't have to worry. In those days, we cried because we thought we lost you, we went crazy about it... and it were hard times, because the dragons went crazy too...” My mind went blank. All of the sudden, everything that Astrid said, couldn't make it to my ears. I realized something. “What if the dragons went crazy about... my loss?”, I muttered to myself and Astrid started to frown. “Are you... listening?”, she asked quiet hurt between some snuffling. I nodded. “Yes... yes of course! And... I thank you all but... I just... had an idea.” Their faces went blank and a few people started to whisper in the back. “What if... the reason why the dragons went so crazy, was because everyone thought, I was dead?” The whispering got even louder and Snotlout squashed the candle in his hand, looking really angry and mumbling something to himself. “I mean... think about it! You all have... I mean, had, connections to your dragons. Your connections build up over years and... what if the fear you felt, was sensed by them and made them worry and-” “Enough!” I looked around to find the person who interrupted my speech, to find no one other than my own father. “Don't you realize what you are doing right now?”, he asked angry, hurt and confused at the same time. I didn't. I feel so stupid for not realizing what I did. “But what if it's true? I'm convinced, that it's true! When I went into the cave, the dragons were peaceful and-”, I tried to explain but he cut me off once again. “I said, ENOUGH!”, he yelled, heavy breathing. Merida helped him standing and she gave me a look but I was too stubborn to let her message get through. 'What are you doing?' “I will prove it! You will see!”, I yelled, looking into shocked faces, but the one that hurt me the most to look at, was Astrid's. She was a nervous wreck. A look into her eyes told me, that she wasn't sure herself, what force stopped her from breaking down on the ground. What kind of power let her legs carry her weight. But I ignored it. I turned around, taking the same way back. I was so obsessed to show them that I'm right, that I overheard some important sounds... * clink *
(A/N: Dam-dam-daaaaam! *gasp* This wasn't really clever, was it? But more important is... is he right? What will happen later, in the cave? How will the people of Berk react, when he comes back.. or maybe, if he ever comes back? --- Uhhh so many questions~ I'm sorry for the late update and stuff ^^'' How did you like the 'surprise' :3? @Craazzy_Fangirl13 was this what you imagined :D? Or did you thought of something else ^^? Anyways... thanks for reading! <3)
