{Year 12}
- 5:30pm -
My phone buzzes on my bedside table the screen lighting up with a photo of Einstein goldfish peeking out from behind his plant. Emma's name flashes across the screen as the phone continues to vibrate but I ignore it. The phone call ends and the screen goes black leaving me in darkness. With my blinds closed, the fairy lights that line my ceiling are the only source of light apart from my laptop playing Friends episodes.
I am only partly watching trying to distract myself from my humiliation and annoyance with myself. My friends had tried to warn me about Harvey. I had given him the benefit of the doubt, and he hurt me. I thought we were friends. My phone makes another insistent buzz beside me, and I read the message that appears on screen.
ANSWER THE PHONE BEFORE I CALL YOUR MOTHER
I am worried about you
My phone buzzes with another incoming call, but this time I answer it.
"Audrey!"
"Hi Emma." I sigh, settling back against my pillows.
"Jungkook told us about what happened with Harvey."
Of course he did.
"Are you okay?"
"Totally." I chirp with false enthusiasm.
"Audrey. You know you can be honest with me."
"Yeah, I know."
"Now, answer me honestly, are you okay?"
"No."
"I thought so. What's going on babe, tell me."
"I am so humiliated Em. I trusted the friendship I had built with Harvey, and then when he didn't get what he wanted he threw me to the ground. The boys were right about Harvey. I should've been more careful."
"You couldn't have known what his intentions were Aud. You are a kind person, and you want to give everyone a chance to earn your trust. Unfortunately, he just took advantage of that."
"He said some awful things to me and..." I choke out, and fist my hand into the fabric of my pyjama shirt, "I think Kookie heard him and... and he probably thinks badly of me..."
"Aw Audrey. I don't think that he would, you are his friend. Even if he did, it wouldn't matter. Would it?"
"Yeah... Yeah it would... God... I think..." I stammer, and a single tear rolls down my cheek, "I think I like him."
