{Year 9}
- 3:26 pm -
The school bell echoes in the silent classroom, inviting an immediate chorus of noise from my classmates as they begin to pack away their things. Chatter fills the room and the strained atmosphere following the locust's incident has evaporated into thin air. Thanks to the way guilt had curled its fingers around my thought I haven't spoken a word since the lesson started. Jungkook had left the classroom half-way through the lesson, and had been gone until there was only five minutes left in the lesson. When I look up from my crossed arms, Jungkook is leaving the classroom and when our eyes meet his are scarily calm.
"Audrey?"
I look away from Jungkooks gaze to find Emma standing in front of my desk with her bag already packed and slung over one shoulder. I look down at my books still sitting on the table and begin to pack them away while she chatters on about our cooking class tomorrow.
"God I hope we don't cook Spaghetti Bolognese, I swear that is the only dish Mrs Crow knows how to make" Emma rolls her eyes, and helps me pack away my pens into my pen case.
"I am sure that she will give us a new dish to make this week, besides, I wouldn't mind having the spaghetti bolognese that you make again Emma." I smile over at her, swinging my bag over my shoulder.
"Aw Aud," Emma swings an arm around my shoulder as we walk out of the classroom, "what did I do to deserve a friend like you?"
The hallway outside is filled with people walking towards the exit, and without our trailblazer James, Emma and I get sucked into the crowd. It is only our linked arms that prevent us from being swept away from one another. Shoulders bustle against mine as we stumble down the hall and into the entryway. Emma leads me towards lockers which are only a few feet apart, luckily, and we stop for a moment to take a few deep breaths.
"Hey ladies, crazy History lesson, aye?" James sidles over, and leans against my locker with a lazy wink.
"Yes." Emmas voice is hard as she pushes past him and opens her locker.
"How'd those locusts get in your bag, Kook?" James moves away from my locker revealing Jungkook.
"No idea." Jungkook's face is a practised blank, and a hot flush covers my cheeks. I turn my head hiding behind a curtain of honey strands.
"It was a good prank, no?" Emma goads, smirking up at Jungkook as she slams her locker shut, "and stop harassing Audrey, we have to go before my mum leaves without us."
Jungkook and James step aside, allowing me access to my locker. I step forward, and become very aware of everyone's eyes on me as I enter my locker code. My locker swings open and my mouth drops somewhere near my scuffed-up sneakers. A small fishbowl sits in my locker on top of my textbooks. The study-notes that I had spent all last week preparing for the oncoming exams are inside the fishbowl, being nibbled on by a small goldfish with massive goggly eyes. My daily planner is also floating around in there, along with a few of my good drawing pencils and the napkin that Harry Styles signed for my aunt when she ran into him while visiting London. My mind is going crazy, emotions running wild. I don't know whether I should be mad, sad, or impressed by Jungkooks prank. But it is the fact that my Harry Styles napkin is currently being nibbled on by a goggly-eyed goldfish that I become mad.
"Harry!" I shriek, my hand lunging into the fishbowl and enclosing around the now soggy napkin.
The poor fish is flitting around the fishbowl, startled by my hands sudden appearance. I ignore it, flattening the napkin against the locker, trying to keep it in shape. Emma is standing beside me, her mouth hanging open, she hasn't uttered a word since I opened the locker. I spin on my heel to see James grinning like an idiot, and Jungkook looking on with a look of smug satisfaction on his face.
"What did you do?" I cry as the napkin tears in half. I didn't care that my study notes had been destroyed, but that napkin was one of my most favourite possessions.
"I got you back." Jungkook says simply with a shrug.
I shake my head, trying to take control of my emotions, and reach into my locker for the plastic bag I know is in there. With shaky fingers I begin to scoop out the soggy study notes and drop them into the plastic bag.
"Hey. It's just a prank. Only an hour ago you unleashed a hoard of locusts on the class." James laughs, giving me a playful shove before sauntering off towards the door.
"I'll go and put these in the bin." Emma says gently, taking the rubbish bag from me.
I stand in front of my locker, staring at the fish as it nibbles from a scrap of paper I had missed, a photo of Albert Einstein. Jungkook reaches over me and places a folded square of paper onto the bottom of my locker. I gasp softly when, after unfolding it, Harrys Styles signature is present on its surface. I turn to face Jungkook holding the paper in my hands.
"I know how much your treasure that napkin, the other one was a fake. I am not a total douche Aud." Jungkooks voice is soft, and my heart lifts a little as I gaze up at him in wonder.
He gives a little shrug, completely ignorant to how much he has lifted my mood by saving that damned napkin. I smile faintly, taking the napkin and sticking it back on its place next to my harry styles poster on the locker door. Jungkook rubs the back of his neck before murmuring a quiet 'bye' and beginning to walk away from me towards the door.
"Hey Kook!" I call and he turns around to face me, "I am keeping the goldfish."
"Aw yeah? What is his name?" He grins, sticking his hands into his pockets and begins to walk backwards slowly.
"Einstein."
