"Ugh, why did I let you convince me to come here?" I said, sitting beside Jaz in a circle with other girls who looked more than thrilled to be there. We all sat on the floor, some sat in cris cross style, others sat on their calves with their hands pressed eagerly in their thighs, and the rest laid on their stomachs and kicked their legs back and forth in the air. I sat with one knee propped up and my arm resting on it. This is not some girly sleepover movie from the 40s.
"Because we both agree that you need friends." Jaz said while sitting in cris cross style, like many of the other girls. It's been a couple of months since school started and I still hadn't made any friends. I didn't see a problem with that, but Jaz did.
I looked around the room at the gaggle of giggly girls across the floor; watching them reading girly magazines, painting their nails, giggling at text messages, and twirling their hair with their fingers. So simple minded.
"I think we have two different ideas of friends" I emphasized the word "friends" with air quotations.
"C'mon Mel," Jazmyne tried to reason, "You're in the middle of a college sorority where you'll meet your sisters for life! That doesn't excite you at least a little bit."
"...You'll have to excuse me if I don't leap with joy."
"Ugh you're no fun." She said with a smile as she booped my nose.
"Well hello girls!" A voice sounded off from the top of the stairs, "Welcome to the House of the Infamous Beta Ladies!"
The girls around me started cheering and shouting and...overreacting. I mean it could just be me and my "dreadful outlook on things" as Jaz likes to call it, but she seems sort of narcissistic to me already.
Once I got a good look of the girl's face I recognized that it was the same girl the Jazmyne was arguing with. Carmen.
"I'm the house head sister, Carmen." She said as she walked down the stairs, "I'm pretty sure all of you are eager to be here, I mean how could you not be we're the Betas."
Narcissistic. As I said.
"But you're not members yet." She continued once she stepped off the last step, "You have to prove yourself worthy to be one of us."
Ugh I wanna go homeeeee!
"This is not just a sorority that you join for four years just for the hell of it. This is a sisterhood."
I could really go for a burger right now...
"This is the best sorority on campus. No one does it big like we do."
Wait...did I turn the oven off before I left?
"If you're not ready to endure what we put you through..."
I think I turned it off...
"...then you're not cut out to be our sister."
I snapped out of my thoughts when I realized that she was right in my face talking. She was directing her words to me.
"I can tell you won't last a week." She said with a sneer smirk.
"Oh wow, that's great," I said sarcastically, "that's longer than what I thought I would've lasted in a sorority that I've never even heard of before. Didn't think it was as big of a deal as you made it."
She scoffed angrily and walked off in the other direction. That's what you get bitch.
"Well we'll see what you have to say after HayWeek." She smirked, "Goodnight."
