The bright lights of the hospital ceiling were burning bright into my eyes as they rolled me through the emergency room entrance. My eyes hadn't really even adjusted to the dark of outside, let alone the bright fluorescent lights.
The doctors and nurses quickly wheeled me and Angelo through the building and into rooms. I didn't see Angelo after they had separated us into different rooms. I knew they had to run more vigorous tests on him to see if he was still breathing or if he was in a coma. I knew that we wouldn't be in the same room but I wished that we were so I could see if he was okay.
The doctors checked my breathing and ran a few other tests and said that I would be fine but they were gonna keep me for a few hours to keep check on me.
"Excuse me, ma'am," I stopped one of the nurses before she could leave, "can I see my friend?"
"He's in ICU right now, no visitors, I'm sorry." She said.
"Can you tell me if he'll be okay?"
"Sure, I'll go check for you now." She answered and then left.
After she left, I twisted and twiddled with the pocket knife from Angelo's car in my hand. It was weird but I didn't want to leave it. I felt protected by it. So I kept it.
The silence that lingered in gave me time to think about everything that had happened.
First, the brakes stopped working but Angelo should have felt that there was something wrong with the brakes when he got to the studio by himself and it should have been messing up already but they worked perfectly fine. Next, we crash and the car catches fire, according to Professor McBride. The fire started at the front of the car but when Professor McBride got there, it was mostly on Angelo instead of both of our sides. The fire should have spread evenly. Next, my side's car door was jammed but Angelo's wasn't. That's next to impossible, I doubt my door would be jammed when there seemed to be no damages to neither side. Then, my seatbelt was jammed. That was probably a coincidence but still, it's too coincidental to be paired with everything else.
I decided it was time to investigate.
I pulled out my phone and dialed Professor McBride's number.
"Hello?" He answered.
"Hey Professor McBride, it's Melena."
"You know we're in the same building right Melena?" He said.
"Yeah but I'm pretty sure the doctors won't let me roam around with my breathing being slightly uneasy, regardless of me feeling perfectly fine." I said, "But anyway, do you know where Angelo's car is?"
"They took it to the pound." He answered, "Why?"
"Oh no reason," I said, "I just need to get something out of it."
"Melena." He said. "The car blew up."
"I know I just need to check." I lied.
"Okay." He let it go, "Goodbye."
We hung up the phone and I dialed my next number.
"Mel! Are you okay?!" Jazmyne answered frantically.
"Yeah I'm fine. I need you to do me a favor when the hospital releases me." I said.
"What do you need me to do?" She asked.
"I need you to take me somewhere. I'll tell you when you get here but I have to go, the nurse is coming back. Bye."
"Okay Mel, bye." She said and hung up.
I shoved my phone back into my pocket as the nurse walked through the door of the room.
"Well I have good news." She started, "Your breathing's still slightly off but the doctor has decided to let you go soon."
"What about Angelo." I asked.
"Well Angelo hit his head on the steering wheel extremely hard and went unconscious. He's awake now but he has 3rd degree burns on his body that need to be treated and the severe smoke inhalation could be at dangerous levels for his lungs so we need to keep watch on him. He'll be here for at least a week." She explained.
"Can I go see him?"
"He's not granted guests until tomorrow."
"Okay, when will I be released?"
"Very soon." The nurse answered, "We have to check your heart one last time and then you should be good to go."
"Okay," I said, "Thank you."
"No problem." She said, then left the room.
•*•*•*•
Not long after that, they checked my heart and then released me. I walked out of the building and got into Jazmyne's car.
"So, where am I taking you?" Jaz asked.
"The pound." I answered.
"The pound? Why?" She said confused.
"I just want to check on Angelo's car." I said.
"Come on, Mel. You just got into an accident." She said, "You need rest so I'm taking you home."
"I need to check on it Jaz." I said.
"No Mel!" She slightly raises her voice then lowered it again, "I'm taking you home, you don't need to be out by yourself tonight. I'll take you tomorrow but not tonight."
I gave in, even though my curiosity ran wild, "Fine."
She drove me to the dorms and I got out, waving her goodbye as I walked in. I walked up the stairs, since I didn't trust the elevator. The only time I went on it was with Angelo and since Angelo isn't here I refuse to go on it. Once I finally got to my floor, a little winded I might add, I walked to my room door but the door wasn't as me or Angelo had left it. The door was cracked.
I pushed on the wood of the door slowly to make sure it didn't slam against the wall. I lightly walked into the room, making sure that so sounds were being made. If someone was in the room I didn't want to startle them. Yet.
I looked around and listened but I didn't see or hear any movements in the room. I walked into the middle of the room and I almost screamed.
On my bed there was a dead rat with its stomach cut down the middle and it's insides were smeared all over my sheets. Hanging on the wall was a white sheet of paper that said:
With your bodyguard out of the way, you're vulnerable! Soon you'll end up like this rat!Should've stayed out of it!
With your bodyguard out of the way...
Angelo.
It wasn't a coincidence.
I need to get to the pound.
