I hoisted my backpack up higher and kept on my journey. I looked at James' home made map and smiled. As much as he was good at tracking things, he was horrible at drawing.
I walked down the path and found the fallen tree he was talking about and sat down. I pulled out my water bottle and took a small sip, when I heard a snapping tree branch. I whipped out my machete and prepared to attack. When I saw James I sighed a breath of relief and slid the blade back into the holster on my waist.
"You scared the shit out of me James, please give me a warning next time you plan on doing that." I warned him.
"Sorry y/n. Forgot." James said solemnly.
I couldn't stay mad at him. I hopped over the tree and hugged him. It was nice to see his face after a couple days of being apart. I had to go do a run with the other kids, and it didn't go as planned, but at least nobody got hurt.
When I looked at him with my e/c eyes he smiled lightly and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear and kissed my forehead. We walked over the tree together and he sat his large duffel bag and the tent bag down on the ground.
"Tent or traps?" he questioned.
"I can do the traps." I told him.
He handed me the large duffel bag and I unzipped it carefully. I pulled out the cans that were all hooked together with a long tripwire string. I stood up and gazed around for a perfect place to put them. I jogged over to a space in between two trees and tied it as tight as possible between the entryway.
I took out the bear traps as well, careful not to trigger them and kill myself. I set them away from the campsite, but close enough that any walker coming our way would get trapped.
When I looked back at the bag, James was already setting up the rest of the traps and the tent was pitched. I smiled and looked at the sun, it was already beginning to set. I had to start a fire.
As I walked closer to the camp I grabbed some small sticks and dry leaves. There was still some logs left over from the last time James and I came here. I set them in our small fire pit made of stone and snatched my bag.
Near the bottom I found my lighter, along with a shirt that I thought I had lost and or got rid of. I kneeled next to the pile of wood and flicked the lighter. A small flame spurt out of the top and I moved it closer to the kindling. It slowly but surely caught fire. I smile just as James sat next to me.
He handed me a small satchel and I looked at him confused. Why did he give this to me? He pointed at it as for me to open it. I rolled my eyes playfully and delicately opened the bag. There were marshmallows, chocolate, and probably stale crackers.
"No fucking way..," I looked at him and smiled "I love you."
He smiled, "Talking to me or chocolate?"
I laughed and took out the chocolate. "Both."
