"I'll be fine, I promise." I say, wanting to leave quickly. I just want this to be over with, get the pain over with and have us move on quicker.
"But are you sure you have everything? Shipping will be difficult you know." My mum says, fixing my top so the wrinkles smooth out a bit.
"Yes mum, even if I did it wouldn't matter, you can't go all the way home and back in time." I say honestly. My mum smiles and sighs, pushing some of my hair back behind my ear.
"Okay, I'll let you go, just text me when you get to your grandmas, okay?" She asks, finally calming down.
"I promise, I'll change the card in my phone on the plane and I'll text you when I can, it's a twelve hour flight so don't worry if you don't answer." I say, getting my ticket and passport out of my bag.
"Look at you, my Lindy, moving away to America." She says in awe.
"Yes mum, but if I don't go now, I won't be going." I say with an awkward smile. She nods and with a quick hug we mumble a quick goodbye and I go through security. I don't believe in turning around, back to look at my mum, it will hurt; so I just walk through the shops to the departure lounge and wait for my flight.
I've travelled alone before, it's pretty easy for me now, but since this is going to be permanent it scares me. Yes, I wanted to leave, yes, if I would have stayed in England I would have rather died; but that doesn't make the fact that I'm scared. Things can always go wrong again.
I get on the plane first, my grandma paid for my flight so she got me a first class ticket, I told her not to but she does what she wants with her money. It does give me extra space to read. You see, I'm a hopeless romantic, and with all hope lost for my own love life, I read fake stories about others love life. And with most being based in America, now I get to live in the land where most of my books are based.
The flight goes by quicker than expected, with the books, free drinks and the occasional sleep it felt a lot shorter than it was. I managed to get free champagne until we got into American air which helped too, but it was the unquenchable excitement about starting school that kept me so awake.
Once out of the plane I almost dance out onto the American ground, I put my book away and turn my music up louder. My suitcases come down the carrousel and I am escorted to customs where my visa is checked out and cleared. From there I am taken to the arrival lounge where my grandma's driver picks me up.
"Ms Robinson?" He asks, smiling gently.
"Yes?" I ask.
"I am here to take you to your grandmothers." He says, fixing his hat, clean cut grey hair falling slightly, I smile and nod at him and he leads me to the car. I help him put the bags away as he is fairly old and I get in the sleek black Mercedes.
"I'm Carlton, if you were wondering ma'am." He says as he exits quickly to the main road.
"It's lovely to meet you, you can call me Lindy." I say, he smiles and nods his head. "How long to my grandma's house?" I ask.
"About an hour Ms Lindy. But once there everything is close, and your grandmother has done some shopping." He says. I decide to leave it at that, I get the sense I'm not really supposed to know anything.
My grandma and I haven't really spoken much, only the occasional phone call on holidays and birthdays but I don't know much about her. After seeing that she got me a first class ticket my mum said she was quite well off, she is my dad's mum so she doesn't really know much either but she seems nice enough.
On the way to my grandma's house I can't help but try and fix my appearance. It only properly hit me that she must be really rich when I got in the car, now I want to make a good impression. Sadly, my skin is somehow even paler and dry looking and my wavy hair always looks dishevelled, so there is not much I can do without the things I have in my suitcases; I'll have to settle with how I look.
