JADE
My head snapped towards the door when the knocking stopped, and Jared froze on my thighs, both of us facing the door in the left corner of the room. There was silence, not even a sigh, as we waited for the knock to return.
Then my mom's voice came from the other side of the door.
"Jade? Are you in there?"
Oh no. I quickly pushed Jared, nearly sending him to the floor.
"What do we do, what do we do, what do we do?" I panicked, but Jared remained remarkably calm, running his hand through his hair.
"Hide!" I hissed at him.
I had no other plan. I was currently in nothing but my underwear, unable to concentrate with my mom just a wall away. I grabbed the nearest clothes from the floor and hastily put them on. My hand found Jared's wrist and pulled him with me, and he followed willingly.
"Wait... Mom, waaait!" My voice quivered as I scanned the room for a place to hide Jared while my mom was here. She would want to come in.
"Where can you hide?" I asked him, but he looked at me as if we weren't in a crisis.
He only smiled and took hold of my wrist, gently prying my fingers from his wrist. He led me slowly toward the door, whispering, "Just hide me behind the door when you open it. Your mom won't see me."
"But what if she gets inside?" I was clearly panicking.
"You're smart. You'll know what to do," he finally said and leaned against the wall next to the door. He turned the knob himself, not giving me a chance to argue.
"Wait—" I was too late.
He swung the door open, and as he'd promised, he was well-hidden. The door revealed my mom, and I managed to halt it midway so that only half of my body was visible to her.
One leg was exposed, the other hidden.
"Mom," I quickly greeted her, realizing how fake it sounded.
She had a worried expression, but as her gaze traveled up and down my body, a smile crept onto her face.
"You're having one of your lazy days, aren't you?"
I didn't get it at first, but when I glanced down at myself and saw that I was wearing Jared's shirt instead of mine, I wanted to hit myself.
Lazy days—a time when I'd simply pick out the biggest shirt in my closet and put it on, no shorts, just a baggy T-shirt and some pillows to survive a day in my room.
"Oh... yeah, I am actually lazy... I mean, I am lazy today. In fact, I just wanted to lay down the whole night." I was talking too fast, and I noticed my mom's look shifting to suspicion.
