I believe the reason why we don't see folk creatures in Scandinavia and surrounding regions is because they're either in hiding or they were all killed. Or the gods might be protecting them.
Them all being dead is really sad but I feel like it might be a possibility. Considering human nature we kill or attack things we don't understand or are afraid of. That and the people that brought the religion that conquered the traditional Vikings taught them that the folk are actually demons. So I wouldn't put it past post 1,000 A.D Scandinavian people to kill them off. Think of it as the unicorn hunts from the Middle Ages.
(1,000 is when traditional Vikings no longer existed and they started to migrate to what is now England.)I also think that they might be in hiding. After all they're really old and know their forests, caves, and lakes well. Considering how crafty they are in stories I'm positive they're well hidden from humans. I think they would reveal themselves but I can imagine after seeing how people are they might not be that trusting of us.
This last one is one a Norse Heathen I know talked to me about. He's the same one that discussed the Nix heritage with me. He proposed that divine interference happened. The Gods are pretty powerful and he believes that they cast a spell that makes them have the ability to voluntarily become basically undetectable.
I will say that I have had experiences with some creatures which is odd since I'm in America but I'm sure some would want to get away to a more warm country. I remember being at a beach and sometimes I would see the faces of women in the ocean water near a pier. You can say I was seeing an illusion but it was in to much detail to be a figment of my imagination or something false.
The chapter art is of a Nix Rose.
