I run up to the desk out of breath. I pant out between heavy breaths, "Park MiHi. She was just brought here."
"Okay calm down sir. Catch your breath, please. You said Park MiHi... Let's see. I don't have anything on her quite yet, but you said she was just brought here so she may not be in the system yet. One second I can call down to emergency and ask if they have her." The woman behind the desk then picks up the phone pressed some buttons and then waits.
"Hello, this is the front desk do you have a patient with the name Park MiHi there?"
"Okay. Thank you." The woman sets the phone back on the receiver and looks up at me. "They said that she got brought to surgery."
"Surgery?" I croak out. Why surgery?
"Yes, you can go up to the third floor once she's out of surgery she will be placed in a room there."
All I do is nod my head and turn to walk away. I head straight to the elevator and mechanically press the button. Surgery? Why does she need surgery? It was just a concussion and a broken arm, that's all the medic said that it was. How does that lead to surgery? My mind kept thinking of all the ways things could go wrong. People sometimes don't live through surgeries. What if she dies in surgery? I don't think I could deal with that. I can't lose her. My mind keeps going ninety to nothing as I step out of the elevator onto the third floor.
I see the woman that was beside MiHi before she got put into the ambulance pacing in the waiting room. She's nervously biting her nails, tears stain her cheeks. She looks like MiHi slightly, just in small, subtle ways like the angle of her eyes and the slope of her nose. She must be MiHi's mother, I conclude.
"Ma'am?" I walk up to her cautiously. She quickly looks up at me, stopping abruptly.
"Yes?"
"Are you MiHi's mother?" she simply nods and starts to pace again. "I-Is she okay? They said she was in surgery..." I pause then add. "I-I'm her friend Jeon Jungkook."
"She's told me about you before. She's okay they just needed to get her arm set back to where it needs to be." She said quietly.
I slowly lift my arm and lightly grab her. "She's okay. You said so yourself. You should sit down Mrs. Park. I'll stay here and wait with you." I bring her over to a chair and set her down then sit down beside her. I'm still anxious and freaking out myself, but I decided to put my feelings on the sidelines to help out MiHi's mom.
"Okay. Yeah, you're right she's just fine the doctors and taking care of her. Thank you." She pats my hand. "MiHi has told me about her new friend she met at work. I don't know much else about you other than that. She's quite a private girl." Her mother begins a conversation.
"She is quite a private girl, isn't she?" I chuckle.
"She always has been." She sits quietly for a second before she says. "My name is EunMi, by the way, I'm glad I got to meet you." She smiles up at me. We keep a light conversation going for about another thirty minutes before a person in scrubs walks up.
"Park MiHi?" Mrs. Park quickly stands up. "She's out of surgery her arm is in place. You can go see her now. Room 311."
"Thank you. Thank you so much." Mrs. Park grabs the doctor's hand and shakes it quickly. Then the doctor bows and walks away. Mrs. Park turns to me and smiles. "She'll want to see you as well." Then she gestured for me to come along with her and so I begin to walk.
When we walk into her room, there is a nurse there checking her vitals and fluids. "She is still slightly under the anesthesia so she'll be asleep for a little while longer, maybe thirty minutes." She tells us right before she walks out of the room.
She looks really peaceful as she lays there sleeping. I smile, knowing that she's okay. I know when she wakes up that she is going to feel the inevitable pain, which makes me want her to sleep until everything is better, so she doesn't have to feel any of that pain.
"Mrs. Park?" I cautiously ask after a long while of silence.
"Yes, Jungkook." She's holding her daughter's hand while staring at her.
"May I ask what happened?"
Mrs. Park then looks away from MiHi's face and up at me. She doesn't answer for a long while. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to." I quickly say regretting even asking in the first place.
"No, no. It's okay. It was all just a big accident..." she looks back down at MiHi and smiles weakly. "Her brother is a heavy drinker, and sometimes he gets angry, and MiHi is a very strong-willed girl. He doesn't usually get physical, but tonight they were arguing over God knows what. She was yelling, and he was yelling, and then they began to go down the stairs as they argued on, and Kang Dae pushed her only slightly, and she lost her footing. He tried to grab her before she fell, but he wasn't fast enough. I've never seen him sober up so fast in my life than in that moment." Mrs. Park had tears streaming down her face as she finished talking. I didn't know how to react or how to process what Mrs. Park had just told me nor did I have time to because a small voice filled the silence that Mrs. Park had left behind.
"Eomma?"
