I was sitting at the table with my bank account opened in front of me. I never checked it Thursday. I know, why wouldn't you look at your pay when you get it, Lainey? Because I had other things to worry about.
But this was absurd. I wasn't pissed. In a sense.
$3,360.
All for taking phone calls and forwarding emails of interest to the man. I was expecting nothing more than a hundred.
I grab my phone and quickly dial Austin's number which he'd given me Friday while walking. But I hadn't given him my own so the probability of him answering was minimal.
"Austin Wood speaking," he states ina very monotone voice.
"Why the fuck would you pay me so much? That's absurd you dickwad! What am I supposed to do with this money?"
He chuckles slightly, the phone vibrating in my ear. "Because that's what my previous assistants were averaging."
I sigh, falling back into the couch and pushing my laptop off my legs.
"You realize that if we call it quits I get roughly $3,669 a week, right? Because you're going to go bankrupt and then I'll have to quit and work at McDonald's. Not that that's a bad thing but it won't pay my student loans, Austin."
"Calm down, Laines. It's not even a dent in the budget for employee pay. And some of it comes from my pocket anyways," he tired to reassure me but I wasn't taking it.
I snort unattractively, trying to make myself feel better about the situation with a good ol' fashioned joke, "You must have some pretty large ass pockets. Should I get them tailored? Do people still do that?"
"Goodbye, Lainey," Austin whispers gently, to which I look around for no reason in particular.
It's better to not ask questions.
"See you tomorrow, Sir."
The line went silent but I damn know he was still there.
I remain silent, not sure of what to say. I did it now let me tell you.
"I'll see you tomorrow," he says after a few moments of pure silence.
"See you tomorrow."

Thea and I spent Sunday shopping for both Thanksgiving and clothes for both of us. We were in great need. Not really but I'm terrible at money management. Not that our total dented my bank account in the slightest.
I was still dumbfounded by my pay. I never really got a set pay. I got an estimated number when the job was offered but it depended on whether or not Austin liked me. Especially if I was going to transition into his full time assistant. So far there was hardly any discussion, but my pay was clear enough to know we were getting there.
I got dressed this morning in my usual attire. I bought a few new work clothes but I wasn't trying to walk in looking like a stripper and an old woman. There really was no balance.
I settled with a pair of black dress pants that were cropped above the ankle and had minimal flow but just enough, and a white laced blouse. I wasn't looking hideous, but it also was just thrown together without Thea so I was a little skeptical.
I pull on my new tan coat and make my way down the flight of stairs rather carefully. Well three and I still can't keep steady in heels. I don't think I could ever get used to this if I'm being honest.
