The sound of a bustling city was more homey than that of a rural town echoing crickets in the darkened night.
Brent, who lives in a darkened apartment just outside of Manhattan, had the awoken city blasting just below us while his apartment filled with joyous laughter.
We were talking about everything, and nothing at the same time. Our group of friends was an office romance of the century, and Thea's involvement, although it created a safer outlet for her animalistic partying ways, had created some sort of rift between us all.
Thea was my only sister, and I loved her with the entirety of my heart, however, her incapability to make friends as a child caused me to share Dane and Britt, but falling out of contact with both leveled me out to a working environment with the people I loved. Having Thea here tonight would ruin the conversation and as much as I wished to have Brent's apartment full of life and love, I saw it to be better to keep this gathering just us.
Brent and Hails hadn't minded the alone time altogether and her wild ways of conversation left us to battle with comfortability during our talking. Had Thea been here, our conversation from who was sleeping with who in the office, would seem too impersonal and unexciting which would cause an outbreak of lecturing about how idiotic our topic choices were tonight.
With my sister on my mind and the lack of information in the Brent and Thea situation, I place my glass of water down on a coaster and stretch my body in preparation for the bone cracking and headache giving details.
"Alright," I draw attention away from the counting fingers as they rallied up how many they assumed to be sharing sexual desires, "I want to know everything about you and Thea, Brent. And don't leave a damn thing out."
Mahalia claps her hands from beside me and we situate ourselves like children being read a story.
Brent, who sat on a pillow across from us, rolls his eyes. But it was clear from the candle in front of him that he was blushing rather feverishly at the mere topic of his sex life.
"There isn't much to say, Laines. And she's your sister I'm sure that's-"
I lift my arms up in self defense, making his eyebrow crooked in what I assume to be confusion at my animated action.
"She might be my sister, but you're my best friend. We tell each other everything. She knows when, where, how, and what exact position Austin and I were in in countless occasions."
I watch as my two friends shiver in disgust jokingly, before Brent exhales a sigh. Taking one last sip of his wine that him and Hails had consumed all night, I impatiently wait for the nitty gritty details.
"It was Friday so we went out. You'd just left and we were on the verge of being drunk. I stopped drinking and so did Thea while Mahlia here got hammered and took off in a cab to tell her sister she was a prick."
Hails mouth forms an 'o' shape before turning to face me with her finger pointedly directed at my slouched position, "I did do that, yeah."
I shake my head amusedly before turning my attention back to Brent who carried on the conversation awkwardly.
"I don't really know why, but we both sobered up at the bar and I offered to drive her home. She said okay so I delivered and when we got there, she kissed me."
I couldn't help but kick the air in excitement. Something about love had always made my heart pound with exhilarating excitement. I was happy for Brent even if this one night had not created any shared feelings, but I was happy to know that two people whom I care deeply about, were happy to have shared at least one night with one another.
