Chapter Six: A Murder in the Hills
Sam flipped
Sam awoke just in time to gather her things with Candy and Ethan, and leave for The Inferno. She left her friends at the table front and center with Jared and ran for the back stage. She dressed quickly and had her hair and makeup done in record time.
She then moved to the side of the stage and waited until the music began, as the lights turned down, the sultry beat of their practiced routine came on. As it went, she gracefully strutted across the stage and made eye contact with Candy, who was grinning from ear to ear, holding Jared and Ethan’s hands. Sam felt wonderful that her best friends were now fast friends.
She then looked to Ethan, who was currently wide eyed, and watching the girls every move. As he connected eyes with her, he flushed and Sam laughed. The music ramped up, and the dancers started to strip seductively.
They left the club early the next morning when the review was over, Candy and Ethan were extremely tired, even though they napped earlier. Sam spoke with Jared for a short while before she left, Jared was in love with her best friend and her husband, so all was well, and Sam felt pleased. Life could not get any better than this.
Jack flipped
Jack had made contact with one of Sam’s apartment managers and learned that Sam had not been told by him that her mother was dead, and that he assumed the matter was dealt with by the police department. Jack snapped his phone closed in frustration. On one level, he was glad that Sam had not been told by a stranger, on the other he was uncertain of his welcome. He knew he effectively cut all contact with her the night of the Frosts wedding.
For right now he needed to focus on finding Sam to bring her home and keep her safe, clearly her apartment was not safe. If his police training had taught him anything, men were innocent until proven guilty and until they could without a shadow of a doubt prove that her father was indeed the killer, there could still be harm to Sam.
The flight landed a time later, and Jack made his way to her apartment. A staff member led him up to via the worker's entrance. They knocked at the door and waited for an answer. A deliciously rumpled woman answered, and she had raven-black hair, and a body that was curved in all the right places.
Jack looked deeply at the woman and realized it was Sam.
“Sam? Sam Cooper?” Jack asked.
Sam who was rubbing sleep from her eyes stopped and squinted at Jack, “Detective Riggs?” She looked very tired and extremely confused, but also as hot as hell. Jack was taken aback by the instant lust; he felt flow through his bloodstream at the sight of her.
Sam flipped
Sam answered her door and tried to remove the sleep crusty from both her eyes. It must be a staff member to her apartment. They had never knocked upon her door at this hour. Candy and Ethan were still asleep they had a very long night last night. She opened it and was stopped by a voice that entered her ears, “Sam? Sam Cooper?”
It was a very familiar voice; she looked out from her hands and saw, Jack Riggs.
“Detective Riggs?” She could not believe her eyes, what was he doing here in New York?
“What brings you here?” She could not fathom the reason for his visit.
“Could we go inside and talk, please.” He looked grave and rumpled. She led him into the apartment and said good-bye to the member of staff. She made a sit motion to her couch as she took her comfy chair. She knew she looked like hell, but she for the life of her could not seem to care about her state of appearance, which was surprisingly nice.
