Chapter Five: Visitors
Sam flipped
Sam awoke the next morning with a terrible head and belly ache; she felt no better than she had yesterday, she felt worse. She looked at the clock and sighed; it was noon already; she slept more than twelve hours.
Sam made her way into her kitchen for some water; she sipped slowly and hoped she would feel better soon. She walked over to her laptop and sat down. She opened the browser and searched for Jared’s return email. She saw none; confusion clouded her brain as she went to her sent box to check to see if she had actually sent the email, she was sick last night.
She checked the box, and her heart dropped into her stomach; she sent the email to Jack Riggs?
Oh my, God! What did I do?
She opened the email and read her message; she’d sent Jared's email to Jack Riggs.
The nausea rose inside her stomach at that, she had just made a terrible mistake. She wondered if Jack had sent an email back. After the incident at Candy’s wedding, she spam folder-ed him to la-la land.
Sam clicked on the folder and saw that he had indeed sent a reply message. Sam debated on whether or not she should open it. She searched her feelings and found that she was not nearly as anxious or angry as she used to be, perhaps time and distance made her soften, or it could be she was fully over a stupid childish love that wasn’t love at all, but companionship when she needed it. She felt in her heart that she no longer cared about what Jack thought or didn’t think, or the fact he distanced himself because he did not feel the same way.
She clicked open the email and read,
Sam,
This is Jack, Jack Riggs. I received an email from you that I think belongs to another person. A friend perhaps, anyway, I just wanted to let you know. As I read in your email, you are in New York attending school? That must be exciting, I am sorry to learn you are ill, I hope you improve soon. I have made detective since we saw each other last, and my life is always a balancing act. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you feel better.
Jack Riggs
Sam sank back and tried to discover any hidden meanings in the email and realized there was none. It was Jack being Jack, his usual white-knight self, a soiled white knight, but one none-the-less. There was no mention of the incident at the wedding and Sam searched her heart and felt, nothing. It was amazing! She was over Jack Riggs. Well, Detective Jack Riggs now, it would seem.
Sam clicked reply and wrote:
Detective Riggs,
Thank you for letting me know that I sent you an email by accident; I was very sick when I sent it and pressed your address instead. Yes, I am attending NYU, and am very busy with studies and campus life. Congratulations on your promotion, and thank you for your concern; however, there is little you can do from so far away.
Regards,
Samantha Cooper.
She read over her email and smiled through her misery; it was nice, but also impersonal. It was exactly the way she felt at the moment, and she felt she was ready to click send.
She let the email go, Detective Jack Riggs already forgotten as Sam rushed back to the bathroom.
A time later her mother called repeatedly; Sam finally answered her phone to a very angry woman, who was once again fighting with her father.
