Chapter Twelve: Running Away
Shortly after they left her parent’s home, Jack seemed to move away. He felt the sexual encounter had meant something more than what he was willing to give. Sam had feelings for him before; he did not want her to do so once more. He was not marriage material; his wife had died, pregnant with their preliminary child, because he had put his job first, he would not allow that to happen again.
Sam felt the cold distance that Jack put between them and tried not to let it bother her. Even as they drove to Jack’s office to hand over the name of the PI to the lead detective, nothing was said between the two. As time passed Sam was becoming angrier, angrier at Jack and more so at herself. She knew she did not love him, but she wasn’t a one-night stand either. They were having an affair, but the rules were they saw only each other. Which; meant a relationship of sorts. They dropped off the information, and Sam spoke with the other detective as Jack did some work at his desk. Subsequently, the pair stopped at a local Chinese takeout; Sam declined any food in favor of going back to the apartment.
Later, that night when they entered his apartment Sam announced, “I am going to take a shower and then go to sleep. I am very tired.”
Jack watched as she walked up his stairs and cursed under his breath, he knew he was acting like an ass, which he did not like, so he followed her up the stairs.
By the time he made the journey, he heard the shower going, which meant Sam was naked and wet, and Jack knew he lost all reasoning around her when she was tempting. Shaking his head and cursing his own stupidity, he opened the door and walked to the stall.
“Sam, I think we need to talk,” he stated.
“And you believe accosting me in the shower is the proper place to conduct a conversation. It’s alright, Jack; I get it; you are pissed off about something that happened back at my parent’s home, and you are sulking; it is not a big deal, a little juvenile, but not a major problem.”
What the fuck was she talking about? He was the one sulking; he was the one with the problem? The aggression grew inside of his blood as he tore the curtain down the rod, she was expected naked, and surprised. She went to cover her nether regions and breasts with her hands.
“Excuse me, I am the one sulking; I am the one acting juvenile? You had about as much to say as I did since we had sex on your father’s desk today. I am not saying I am without blame here, but you…”
That last statement threw Sam over the edge; she took her hands down from her exposed areas and placed them on her hips, “You are unbelievable! The blame lies entirely with you! You are the one that gave me the cold shoulder after we screwed on my dad’s desk. What exactly is your problem?”
The question hung in the air as Jack stared at her wet and naked body. What was his problem? He knew her words were correct; he was the one that backed off after their encounter. Maybe his emotions were getting the best of him.
“Perhaps we should stop the sexual aspect of our relationship and return to just a working one. I was assigned to protect you and watch over you while we investigated your mother’s death. I will sleep on the couch, and you may have my bed.”
Sam’s heart contracted at his words; he was effectively ending their relationship; just as he did at Candy’s wedding. Frustration began to boil in her blood, as she looked into his eyes; the eyes she overcame just last year. She refused to believe he had entered her heart, so she said the only thing she could think of, “Fine, now will you please leave and shut the door; the air is growing cold.” She then turned her back to him and began to rub shampoo into her hair.
