coming out

the phone rang loudly; it's slow, monotonous ring seemingly echoing through luke's ears as tears rolled down his pale cheeks. he was sat in between the legs of his boyfriend, michael, receiving gentle circle rubs on his back.

he and michael had been together for a little over 6 months now. luke had been out to his friends for a few years, but one person who still didn't know was his mother. thoughts raced wildly through his head as he heard the ringing stop and the sound of his mother's voice coming through his phone.

'hey honey, nice of you to call me instead of text.' his mother said lightly, laughing a bit. luke chuckled, feeling michael tighten his grip around him.

'hey mum.'

'is everything alright, you sound upset?' luke felt tears in his eyes as his words got caught in his throat. michael was playing with his free hand, whispering soft words and trying to calm down the anxious boy a little bit.

'yea, uh, i'm okay. i just, had to call and tell you something.'

'okay, lu.'

a silence passed and luke felt his heart pounding as his mind took over and the words he needed to say came out.

'mum, i'm gay.'

there was a silence and luke took this time to start crying. michael just rubbed his shaking shoulders.

'lu, you know i love you. and nothing could make me stop loving you. you're my son. i'm sorry that i didn't make you feel as though you could easily come out.'

'y-you don't - you don't hate me, mum?' luke heard his mum start crying.

'no baby, i love you so much. i don't care who you love, i just want them to treat you like a prince.' michael wrapped his arms tighter around luke as he broke down, his whole body weak and shaking.

'luke, baby, are you alone?' luke mumbled a no, and handed michael the phone. michael awkwardly answered.

'hi, i'm michael. luke's boyfriend.' he said shyly, not knowing how luke's mum would react.

'please treat my baby, good. he-he deserves the world. i'll call you both back when luke is in a better mindset. i'm sure he's not right now.' michael nodded and held the boy in his arms with his free arm.

'tell luke i said i love him'

when michael hung up the phone, luke immediately crawled fully into his lap and clung to him, tears soaking his shirt.

'baby, you're okay. you're mum said she loves you and that she'll call you back soon.' luke nodded and buried his head further into michael's neck.

'i love you mikey.' luke was trembling in michael's arms as he left kisses all over his face. michael rubbed circles on luke's back.

'i love you too, baby. i'm so happy for you, my love.'
