'i'm so excited for you to meet him!' luke's loud, bubbly voice rang through the small diner that michael's family owned as he waltzed in and took his place at his favorite booth. he was there for his first date with someone he had matched with on a dating app, and, after telling michael all about their plan to meet up, decided it would be best for michael to be around just in case.
'i'm excited for you too, i'll make sure i don't give it away that i know you right away. remember the word if things get weird?'
'i'll just start screaming it like, 'watermelon!' and he'll be so confused he might just leave. but i have a good feeling about this. i'm excited!' luke bounced in his seat as he looked at his phone. 5:53pm. just seven more minutes and his first date with liam would begin.
when 6:30pm rolled around, michael nearly cried at the sight of luke. he still had a little remaining smile on his face, but the tears in his eyes overshadowed that. michael wanted to go sit with him, tell him that 'maybe traffic was bad, try texting him' but he knew that this was something luke needed to come to him with, especially where luke had been so excited.
at 7pm, michael started washing the tables in the diner, as most people had already cleared out. the small amount of hope that had been etched onto luke's face was replaced with tear stained cheeks and hiccups. the diner closed at 8pm.
'w-watermelon! water-' luke sobbed, putting his head down on the table. michael rushed over and tried to help him calm down.
'i know, lu. i'm sorry this happened. how can i make you feel better?' luke was still crying and not responding, but michael figured that with time he would. so, they sat together until 8pm, when michael needed to close the store.
'i'm going to go close up, bub, i'll be back, alright?' luke hadn't looked up from the table in an hour, and michael honestly thought he might have fallen asleep. but luke turned his head so he could see michael, his eyes squinted due to the light.
'i'm really embarrassed, i'm sorry.' michael sat back down and pulled luke in for a side hug, letting luke resting his head on his shoulder.
they sat like that for a while, luke occasionally breaking down and needing a little love from michael. michael was almost happy that he had locked the door a little early, because luke was the most important thing to him right now.
'please tell me if there is anything i can do for you.' luke sat up and wiped his nose on his sleeve.
'just being here is helping me, mike. i really appreciate it.' michael smiled, resting his own head on luke's shoulder.
'he must've been a dick, i wouldn't have liked him very much.' luke laughed, nodding.
'yeah i guess so, i guess i just liked how he seemed to like me.' michael sighed.
'you'll find someone who likes you enough to show up to a date. i promise you.' luke smiled.
'thanks, michael. love you.'
'love you too, lu.'
