Chapter 3

Ive had a reccuring dream since i was young.A woman waits for me at the edge of a river and she wants to drag me into the water but each time i manage to wake up right before she does.Im standing at a beach and i cant realise the faces around me.They are celebrating something or someone.I try to walk into the crown and i fall landing on the beach sand.Im rolling and i cant stop.Suddenly im pulled into a little pool that seems to have come out of nowhere.im drowning.I can feel the water pull me down and im suffocating.Im about to die.I open my eyes and i see a face reflect on the window.It was a dream.A real dream.I could still feel my throat hurting from taking in all the water.I was more than relieved when the rain stopped and the sun shone through the window.I could hear voices in the distance.Yelling and arguing.I could not make out what the argument was about.I tiptoed and opened the door slowly.My heart almost dropped when i saw Chris standing there."You scared me "I said."Im sorry.Good morning.Im glad to see youre up"he said.I kept the door halfclosed.I was naked."Yeah i am"i said nervously."So you do sleep naked"he said.I closed the door."Two minutes" i said rushing to put on a tshirt and some shorts.He was waiting there when i was done."Is everything okay"i asked.He smiled and said nothing.I followed him.Breakfast was ready.I sat down and ate.Chris was quiet.Uma walked in,her face looking a bit pale."Morning,youre up.Its a beautiful day already"she said taking a seat."Yes i slept well,"i said avoiding a long conversation.There was a lot of tension already and i couldnt help but wonder if it had something to do with me being around."Well i would love to look around.Do i need to be escorted in the daylight as well"I asked.Chris answered."Of course,the grassland can get a bit confusing sometimes.Akiliz and I will join you.Please be warned.It gets real sticky out there so i might have to give you some rubber boots"he said."Thank you.Akiliz should have warned me earlier.An hour later i was ready to explore.Firstly i wanted to explore the beach.Pick up some vibes and try and understand what power the water had.Akiliz and Chris came with me.Chris had so much knowledge of his home.I was enjoyinh every thing he had to say."We dont fish much.Everymorning when we wake up the beach is full of food.The crabs,prawns,squids you name it all.Fresh everyday."he said.I was amused."How ?were does it come from?."i asked taking down notes and pictures."Well its always been like that.Eversince we were children.Our mothers and their own mothers were fed that way.Its the water.It gives us food."he said so casually.Mystery food.If i had known i wouldnt have had so much but it was rather too late.We walked down the beach.The food was nestled in basket."Do these come free too?"i asked."No we place them everyday before sunset.Miss coriel.I know it seems that we live a bizzare life but we have for centuries and its been fine for us.A little civilisation has been okay for us.We are a peaceful people and require nothing much from the outside world.Our children go and get educated in distant lands and bring back what they have learnt.Above all we have kept our secrets from the world.The world is not ready for all this"he said sharply his eyes fixed on my recorder.I felt embarrased.I was not here to exploit this island's secret.I was here to learn, for my own knowledge.Although i wasnt too sure about Akiliz.He wanted to exploit his own people and use me as cover up.I turned off my recorder and tucked it away.I looked around.Children ran along the beach picking up baskets.How easy would life be if i could go back home and wake up to an already made breakfast and dinner.I smiled amidst thinking to myself.Chris was looking at me amused."Did i say something funny"he asked.I cleared my throat."Im amused.I seriously am.I would die for a life as simple as this."I said.We stopped walking.I picked up a shiny shell from the sand.It looked light to the eye but it was heavy to hold.It had beautiful rainbow reflections."Can i keep it?"I asked."Please we have plenty.I will take you to were we see the most precious shell deposits.Youll be amazed.".Akiliz came by splashing some water on me.I screamed."A little fun never hurt anyone"he said running like a child.Oh well.Everything was too serious."I will catch you",i said running after him.Chris looked at us as we chased each other on the beach.He could not remember the last time he had such energy.This island had started to take the life away from him and his wife,everyday she would curse him for taking her away from
her country to this cursed place.He scratched his head.Was there any escape?.
